You mentioned this, but I don't have a user.js file anywhere. Not in the FF install directory (or any subdirs) or in the applicationdata directory for FF. I have a prefs.js which looks similar to what you are describing, however it tells you to go to the url about:config and change the settings you want. I tried that, and many settins were listed, but not the ones mentioned. Any ideas? Anybody ever figure out what this problem was?

What does HTH mean? Don't hold your breath.....I'm not "impressed" yet. So far, I find it is a bit of a pain that things don't "work" and you have to go and manually fiddle around with it to get it working. In the long run, its ok for geeks like us....we know how to and aren't afraid to fiddle, but someone like a computer baby wouldn't feel comfortable having to edit config files to get a control in a web page working. I still had a problem on my bank website, with the link that pops up the login window not working. Anyway....jury is still out. But....on the positive side, I like the interface better. I like the plugin ability to search various websites right from a bar like the googlebar, and I like the old unix editor style search (reminds me emacs).

| It goes here: C:\Documents and Settings\*Username*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.1ii Same place as the prefs.js. I must admit that I do hesitate to suggest Firefox to people who don't know anything about computers. I know how to adjust/fix most things in Firefox and I know where to go if I don't and I understand the directions on how to fix things, many people don't and the second one of their favorite sites don't work they will bail. Firefox's biggest flaw is that out of the box it doesn't work with a lot of sites. We can argue till the cows come home about who's fault that is but the fact remains. Users don't care if suchandsuch.com doesn't have their HTML code corrrect, they just want it to work. This is going to be FF's biggest hurdle to claim a larger piece of IE's market share. But for geeks like us, KT, this is a browser dream come true. It will do what you want it to do and not do what you don't want it to do. Spend a little time fiddling with it and it will be almost perfect. HTH=Hope that helps...I could have sworn I saw that a thousand time on this board...oh well. |

What I would really like to see if FF to become a serious enough threat that M$ really cleans up their act with IE and makes it much nicer. Then FF, counters and spruces thiers up even more to counter IE's counter. Let them compete right and left like nobody's business. Because whatever the outcome, WE would be the winners!

Have you checked out Swannema's guide to creating an ABXzone search plug-in? It's a good one.

| I have been having a problem with Firefox losing it's place when using the back button, mostly here on ABXzone. It happens occasionally on other sites but is pretty consistant here (and on other forums). Normally, if I scroll down a page and click on a link, I can use the back button to go back to my place on the previous page but here the back button always seems to take me back to the top of the page. If I scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on the "first" link, then use the back button to come back to this page I am brought to the top of this page. Does anyone know of a fix for this? [EDIT] If there is a post number in the link for this page, like if you followed it from an email notification, you will always be brought back to this post (or the one you clicked the link for) using the back button. Go to another page in this thread, then scroll down to the bottom and click on another page and try to use the back button to go to where you were. I hope this makes sense. |

| Can't log out, so cookie is not deleted I tried to Log Out from ABXZone.com, but with Firefox it just won't work. I sometimes get the message after logging out: "All cookies cleared!", to find out later that the cookies weren't cleared. More often, when I Log Out nothing happens. This never was a problem in IE. Any cure? |

| I have found in FF, I used to install many many extensions just to see what they do.. I have found the ones I like, so I quit installing them. But somewhere in the adding and deletion of extensions, I hosed some settings. No big deal, I was back and running again within minutes. One good thing about FF, if you hose anything up, at least you want have to format to get it working again. Since it is not so intergrated with Windows. Glad to see KT join the FF crew here-- I must say, it is a bit quirky at first, but use it for a week or so- really just learn. IMO, it seems to get better with age. When I use IE, I really hate it now--- Never felt that way before-- At first FF seemed strange, but now- IE seems strange--weird...

| TBP 1.1.1 has been released. This extension provides a comprehensive UI for changing a number of the hidden tabbed browsing preferences in Firefox. It also provides the ability to control how internal and external links are opened in the browser and how the browser will react when links are sent to it. fishyfinger this could help your problem. By using TBP you can open links in a page in a new tab. This way you do not loose your place in a given tab. ![]()

| KT, there are three files you can use to help control Firefox: user.js, userChrome.css, and userContent.js. Using fischyfinger's example, the files are located in: C:\Documents and Settings\*Username*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*default.1ii*\user.js C:\Documents and Settings\*Username*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*default.1ii*\chrome\userChrome.css C:\Documents and Settings\*Username*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*default.1ii*\chrome\userContent.js One extension you can add to firefox is called ChromEdit which can be used to edit these three files.
