XP Antispy

http://www.xp-antispy.org/

Great little app for disabling "features" in windows. Similar to tweak xp but has things that windows wouldn't want you to mess with as well.

Check it out you'll love it.

Kerio isn't on the firewall list. I still use 2.1.5 which is free and works well if you don't like a lot of bloat. Verions 4.x is a more full featured version, but costs money (though it has a limited feature, free mode too). A good free registry utility is RegSeeker. I think Deep Paint 2.0 recently became freeware, might want to add that under image editing. Burrrn is a free program for making audio CD's from files in all kinds of audio formats. Finally, I didn't see Crap Cleaner anywhere on that list. Just a few good free ones I thought I'd mention heh. ;-)

Edit: Just found a free alternative to Nero! It's called CDBurnerXP Pro. Going to try burning a Linux distro to DVD-RW later today. Been working hard lately to create a system totally free of bloated/expensive commerical applications since my last format a week or so ago. So far so good, and the forums for this one make it sound like a winner.

I use Imgviewer32 quite often. It does batch file type conversion, batch resize, crop (shows the height and width of the crop aka 1024x768 etc. in real time), add text, Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma adjustments are selectable by slider bar. Tune Dialogs include Sharpen, Soften, and Blur, color adjustments on the Red/Green/Blue scale and slide shows. And its now freeware.

I notice there's still a (P) beside Opera. Version 8.5 is free. For some reason, there always seems to be misconceptions about Opera. I've been using it since version 5.x, and at that time (and since), it was a free download. A rectanglar banner was in the right upper corner for revolving ads. To me, it was small, unobtrusive -- didn't bother me at all. I never clicked on the banner. Anyway, I think it'd be appropriate to list it now as freeware.

I'm in the process of switching my main AntiSpyware app over to PCTOOLS SpyWare Doctor, SpySweeper has gone down hill in recent months and has been missing some spyware that SpyWare Doctor detects and removes.

I plan on getting TuneUp Utilities 2006 pretty soon. I also plan on getting PC Tools Registry Mechanic, Privacy Guardian, and Spam Monitor.

A few additions (I tried not to duplicate anything already submitted.):

1) Screen Capture software: (This stuff is a great way to record configuration settings when you get certain things optimized.)

(F) MWSnap - http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html
(F) WinGrab - http://www.totalshareware.com/asp/de...plication=6152
No vendor homepage, but generally available at download sites. Google "per.skjerpe WinGrab", rather than just "WinGrab" as there is malware out there by that name.
(P) !QuickCapture - http://www.etrusoft.com/#!quick%20screen%20capture
Probably the easiest to use with the "capture current window" function that doesn't require you to select the window after you hit the quick-key, and quick-keys that don't have to pop up preview windows

2) Rootkit Detection and Removal:

(F) Blacklight - http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/
Freeware for at least a couple more months.
(F) IceSword - http://xfocus.net/tools/200505/1032.html
English version link http://xfocus.net/tools/200509/IceSword_en1.12.rar
(F) Rootkit Revealer - http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...tRevealer.html
Detection only, but the benchmark for many of the others
(F) Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...3-75b8eb148356
Run it on-line at http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx
(F) Resplendence Rootkit Hook Analyzer - http://www.resplendence.com/hookanalyzer
(Thanks PCBruiser) Detection only
(F) Invisible Things Rootkit Tools - http://www.invisiblethings.org/tools.html
An eclectic set of detection related tools

3) File Removal:

(F) Move On Boot - http://www.gibinsoft.net/
(Thanks, PCBruiser) Go to "File Utilities" and check the bottom of the page for freeware versions.
This program assists with files that can't be removed because they are "in use".

4) Download and Help Sites:

SnapFiles - http://www.webattack.com/
My personal favorite for utilities
NoNags - http://www.nonags.com/
Provides only freeware that is provided. and only that without purchase nags, addware, etc.
TuCows - http://www.tucows.com/
One of the better sites
NsClean Freebies - http://www.nsclean.com/freebies.html
Highly recommend HTAStop. DSOStop2 and SockLock are still useful, despite Microsoft fixes
Merjin - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/
Home of free HijackThis! and ADS Spy
JavaCool - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
Home of free SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and MRUBlaster
Diamond Computer Systems - http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=products
Another great site for computer security tools, many of them freeware
Wilders.Org Security Advisors - http://www.wilders.org/
An excellent security help site
Castle Cops - http://www.castlecops.com/
An excellent security help site
Tom Coyote - http://www.tomcoyote.org/
An excellent security help site
Fresh Software - http://www.freshsoftware.com/
Both payware and freeware, best known for Antigen, X-NetStat and Sentry

5) Registry Cleaners:

(P) Registry Vaccine - http://www.horizondatasys.com/produc...tml?page_id=33

6) Spyware Programs:

(F) Windows Defender - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx
(Thanks DutchBBQ) Replaces Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Great list xD here's a few of my favs:

Great list! I'll toss a lil somthing:

Miranda IM (Freeware) I really tiny multi-protocol chat client that has tons of plugins you can use to expand its capabilities. Although I only use it as-is (with the Yet Another Pop-up Plugin, YAPP, installed) I'm able to keep in touch with all my friends that use Yahoo, MSN and Googletalk.

XnView (Freeware) a small and snappy little photo-viewer, which I find useful to organize and view photos, with some built-in photo-editing capabilities. There's a "batch convert" feature, but unfortunately no "batch rename" which I frequently find need for (any suggestions for a software that has this feature would be appriciated).

PHP Designer 2007 (pay) is the first (and only) IDE I ever used, has tons of features (syntax highlighting, built in support for FTP, directory browsing etc. I have no frame of reference, but it just makes my work really easy. Unfortunately Now you only get a free trial; but I had downloaded a previous version (2006) when it was in beta and for free...

CCleaner (Freeware) Great for cleaning up windows machines, removing temp files etc and registry cleaning

  • CPU and Motherboard detection
  • Monitoring support through 3rd party application ( i.e. MBM5, Speedfan and Everest Ultimate Edition 3.50 or above )
