Solution for norton ghost 03+Sata drives

Those of you who are having problems with norton ghost 2003 and Sata drives, heres the solution:
Boot in dos mode and start ghost using the noide option:
ghost -noide

and your Sata drive will be recognised by the ghost software.

Does True Image allow you to make a selective backup of the HDD ? Can you select directories to make a backup image ? I do this with Ghost 8 on a daily basis. I make images of only my XP setup and when I have a problem with a bad driver or software I selectively restore only the directories or files I need to.

TIA

I run Ghost 8 from a Bootable DOS CDR with batch files and I have only 2 SATA drives attached at the moment and dont seem to have the "-noide" option entered in my batch files. Is it necessary to have this option entered even tho I have no SATA drive related problems with Ghost 8 ?

Well, if you don't have problems no need to run -noide option. If you are trying to ghost from Sata to IDE or vice versa and ghost won't work at all, -noide switch is the solution

All you need to do is run Live Update and it will work with SATA or RAID drives. I never used any No IDE option in the past. But I also moved on to Acronis True Image, it's better!

I wasn't aware that ghost could selectively backup just a couple of folders (doesn't this defeat the whole idea of imaging???). I know it could restore them but not back up selctively. It's been a while since I used but I think it doesn't do that like you said.

Anyway, TI can also selectively restore selected folders/files...

Yes - Ghost does do selective backup - of even one single file if you make your selection accordingly - I have done this. You have to use the "-skip" command with a txt file which includes all you directories or files you DONT want to include in the image. My usage of Ghost is more like a backup program than an imaging one. I am sure there are other better backup programs but I have used Ghost for so many years that I do not want to change.

I have a CDR with a few DOS batch files which selectively backup whatever directories I have included new data too. I have one for XP and its installed programs - one for MP3's and one for the AVI/MPG's etc etc. I backup my XP setup every time I change drivers or add programs to it - this is now about 4gb and this is backed up by Ghost in around 6 minutes in 3 650mb files which I burn to CDRW's once a week.

I gave this another thought and you are right - this will not work if you use NTFS - BUT - it does work if you are using FAT32, like me.

I use FAT32 only because I want to make selective backups with Ghost from DOS - this is important for me. I will change to NTFS as soon as I find a replacement software for Ghost's selective backups/images.

My guess is that he made the post with the intention of putting spam links in his signature, which our Board's software would have filtered out because he doesn't have the required minimum number of posts to qualify for signature links.
