Vista 64 Ultimate and Outlook 2003: Can't connect to Exchange Server

I recently switched OSes from XP Pro (32-bit) to Vista 64 Ultimate, loaded all my software and settings, and went to town. For some reason, Outlook 2003 is having excessive difficulty connecting to my hosted Exchange account. I'll get a "trying to connect" message for up to a couple minutes before I am prompted for the password. After that, Outlook will sometimes stay connected and sometimes will not. (No pattern there; just seems random.) Other times, the connections will time out without ever asking me for my password.

My Exchange host (1&1) says that the problem is not on its end, and I tend to agree. If I exit Outlook on the Vista box and try to connect using my account info on a backup XP box, everything runs smoothly. Exit the XP box and hop back onto the Vista box, and the problem is back. And, just to recap, this machine is a clean install. I also am not having issues with any other Internet-related activity -- web browsing, FTP, gaming -- nor is there any issue when connecting to a POP source. It's only Exchange that is giving me headaches.

Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be and how to fix it? I note that a Google search yields a lot of similar posts, but no resolution.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, yes: Both the OS and the Office apps are up-to-date. I also tried disabling Vista autotuning on the connection, but that did nothing, so I re-enabled it.

There are issues with 2003 and Vista . Have you gone to the MS download site and search for a fix(s) for yours or a similar situation? Or did you just use WU?

hmm... I was considering trying Vista 64 when I get my free copy of Vista Ultimate (WFP). I use Office 2003, especially Outlook. This revelation is giving me second (third, fourth) thoughts.

If you are using Exchange 5.5 try this fix.

Re: Vista 64 Ultimate and Outlook 2003: Can't connect to Exchange Server

Zman, I tried that as well but no dice. I also posted queries in some of the MSFT newsgroups, but no luck there, either. As I mentioned, there are a lot of people complaining, but no consistent fixes.

I'd upgrade to 2007 if I thought that would help, but I've seen other issues with that and x64. Just seems like the OS is troublesome...
