This thread has gotten pretty large and it's difficult to know what utilities have been posted and what haven't...Soon I plan to do a summary sheet with the Name and links to the utilities; this should help deter double posting and aid the readers to have a central source for seeing the efforts of the members that have posted here.

Excellent Idea Miles I am sure there are double posts here since it is difficult to determine if said application had been posted before, even the search function turned up negative when in fact it was otherwise (just worded differently)

Most of these are really good application and a lot of people (including me) don't want to sift through every post.

Thats a good idea, are you going to unsticky this thread and sticky a new one with the list? That way it will be a clean start!

Excellent idea!

We need more of this on all of the forums. There is so much infomation located in some of these threads, and it is terribly hard to get all of it.

Maybe a FAQ that is closed for comments? If people want to post comments, direct them to the other thread?

Actually, Paragon and I spoke on the side and I will go ahead and parse the tools in this thread and post them in the summarized list of the other one I started over the weekend. One nice summarized list.

I don't know if anyone has posted this one yet
CLCL is a great program that lets you bring up your copy paste history. Just click alt+c to bring up a tiny popup by your cursor. Great program.

I like this program called "Super File Renamer" which can rename a bunch of files in various ways, "Replace Pattern" being the most useful.

...

Okay, I wrote it

I downloaded and installed it. I didn't notice a dramatic change, if any. It feels like it makes FF slightly faster, however I tweaked FF already before to the maximum. So, to conclude: no real noticeable gain, no shock and awe here.

Aikonik, switch, your two comments really have nothing to do with each other. What that little utility does is set up a local DNS "server". While I am not sure exactly what it does, and I am sure it is not a full DNS server, it probably retains DNS name resolution longer than Windows' local DNS cache (5 hours default). If your ISP's DNS servers are either slow or tend to get jammed up from time to time, something like that utility will help make internet access faster, because it retains the results of prior DNS name resolutions. If that isn't an issue with your ISP, it won't make any noticable difference at all. It doesn't make any difference as far as this issue is concerned what browser you use.

The Firefox tweaks can make Firefox faster regardless of whether you use that utility or not, because once DNS name resolution has successfully happened for any site, FF will more efficiently use your available bandwidth.

Well, it IS a full blown DNS Server as I found out, based on BIND9. It even can even update root-hints from ICANN, ORSC and ORSN. The program however makes a lot of entries in the registry of Windows. You can also stop the service any time and restart it when you want. This proggy is much more advanced than I thought. PCBruiser, I suggest you to give it a look yourself. I'd like to get your opinion on this one.

Bind has a lot of critics as I found out when researching its use in Linux. It seems to be quite the target for hackers and has several vulnerabilities that make it undesireable to use, especially if you are simply looking for a little bit of a tweak in DNS resolution speed. In other words, I don't believe the risks of running a Bind 9 based DNS server for your particular purpose is worth the potential risks.

Sorry I don't have time to be more specific right now, but it should be easy enough to Google for this type of information. I first ran across the issues with Linux as Bind was often given as a solution (or workaround) for slow browsing in certain Linux distros. However, it became immediately apparent that this was overkill and introduced some unwanted security risks.

I don't believe this works for Windows (maybe it does??), but here is an alternative that claims to be more secure and describes some of the issues with Bind. Obviously, the info may be biased on these particular sites, but it is supported by others if you look:
