| Re: PerfectDisk 8 25% off and free upgrade to 9 I have used PD since PD5 and also have 6,7 and 8. The best one's IMO are 7 and 8. They are both better than previous versions. PD8 can defrag external drives but if I remember correctly 7 can't. I can't comment on 9 as its not out yet. What I did when I bought 5 was pay a few bucks extra for the software assurance. So I have always had the latest version for about 7 bucks per year. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

| Re: PerfectDisk 8 25% off and free upgrade to 9 Curious question, how long does the 25% off last? BTW, version 7 you can defrag external drives and version 8 you have to toggle the option first to defrag them. |

| Thanks for the response. What defraging software will defrag and sort alphabetically so I can defrag large storage drives? I don't want any "most frequently used" sorting crap. I want a directory and all the files in that directory all located in one spot on the 500 gig drive regardless of whether I use some of the files in the directory daily and never use other files in the directory. ![]() |

| Re: PerfectDisk 8 25% off and free upgrade to 9 Traveler -- With Perfect Disk you can select the threshold number of days representing "rarely modified" and "frequently modified" ("occasionally modified" would be in between), so I'd imagine that setting everything to 1 day or something like that would pretty much accomplish what you want, with respect to that question. As far as sorting alphabetically goes, what would be the point to doing that (i.e., to locating files on the drive in physical locations corresponding to an alphabetical arrangement by file name, if I understand your question correctly)? Regards, -- Al |

Thanks ctal. I have found the alphabetic sort useful in a few ways. Most memorable was when I unfortuneately got bad sectors or a corrupted hard drive area. When I salvaged what I could I could quickly determine what was lost by clicking 'Name' at the top of Windows Explorer. That sorts things alphabetically in the window. Where ever the alphabetic list was missing I instantly knew the extent of the damage. Doesn't one have to select a sort method when defragging even if it's the default method? Selecting one day would not work. I move blocks of data around. If I moved a directory od data with all its subdirectories and files without a 'sort alphabetacally within each directory' then after the move to optical disk storage I end up with holes all over the 500 gig hard drive (or rather drives). That results in high fragmentation the next time I move data to that hard drive. That's bad if I want to use that video file or whatever it is. On the other hand, if the empty space is one big space, then everything newly moved to it is not fragmented except for only one or two files. It talkes too long to defrag a 500 gig partition constantly. ![]() | |
