Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Nice thing about vista is it pretty much has drivers for everything and dont need to install anything. Xp has very limited built in driver support.

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

You don't always have to install it, but in some cases you do need to to patch the operating system.

For instance, way back when Windows XP Gold and SP1 were the norm, you needed the NSS to have USB 2.0 to function properly. Also, some of the fancy buttons other than power required the NSS for them to function.

It depends on the situation.

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

I didn't install the notebook software or the keypad drivers and device manager says everything is A-ok

*****edit*****
Funny thing is, there is no docking station for the 1700.. I guess they think 17" is as big of a screen as you need..

Did you try updating the driver and letting it go online?

* 17.0 inch Wide Screen XGA+ LCD Display with TrueLife
* 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm

* 160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
* Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini Card
* 8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability
* 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

And of course a pre-installed copy of Vista Home Basic..

Total came to $1097 CDN before taxes

I must say I was rather impressed that it ran as fast as it did once I turned off all the eye candy, but I never intended to keep Vista from the get go.

The fact that the machine wouldn't complete a defrag and the Nvidia control panel kept nagging me to change my resolution to the 1440*900 default (which it already was) helped the decision to ditch it in favour of XP Pro.
I played with Vista for a couple of days just to make sure the hardware seemed to check out and I didn't find any gremlins, so I rolled up my sleeves and waded in.
Hi, wondered if you might be able to help me out? I received my Dell Vostro 1700 back in September and I am very impressed. However, I am NOT impressed with Vista and want to downgrade to XP Pro. I have tried on numerous occasions to load XP, but without any luck. I have tried doing what the Dell Technical Support guys have suggested (Removing a stick of memory, disabling the flash cache mode and also changing the SATA drive option to ATA; this unfortunately did not work and I am back to square 1! I understand that you have XP on your Vostro 1700 and would be grateful for your help in achieveing the same result. I would like to point out though that I am not an advanced PC user and would need basic terms and instructions; I'm also registered Blind!

Would be great if you could help.

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi, thanks for getting back.

Not too sure what the information is that you have sent, does this mean I have to download some drivers? I have tried to instal XP but keep getting the stop error screen, Windows is shutting down to prevent any further damage to your machine! This is an absulute nuisance, which I have never experienced before. I was under the impression that most PC's would take a number of operating systems including XP, which is still relitively new! Anyway, I will have a look around and see what I can find. Sorry if I sound a little thick, I am not that well up on computers and need some guidance.

Thanks again.

Mark.

Sounds like you covered all the bases, I was able to install XP using ata mode with the flash cache disabled without a hitch...
Are you using an XP install disk that has SP2 on it already?
If your XP disk isn't SP2 you'll likely want to slipstream the service pack into it before you start. ( you don't need to bother with SP1 first)
I use a program called nlite to do this, it'll also slipstream the sata drivers onto the disk, so you might as well do that too, then you'll be able to use the native sata mode for better performance.

OK I just found out that you do in fact need SP2 , it is required to prevent pci.sys bsod during the install due to the PCI Express graphics.
