I personally update my install disks once a month with all available updates from MS and most systems install pretty well.

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP Thanks for that, I haven't got SP2 on either of my XP discs (XP HOME & XP PRO). Also today I've been contacted by Dell, they tell me there is more than likely a big hardware issue on my Vostro and have arranged for it to be replaced. They replaced some parts on Friday, but this made no difference whatsoever. Anyway, they tell me that the replacement PC should be here before Christmas, but no guarantees! Maybe when the new machine comes I will have a go at installing XP, think I'll give up on this machine! Thanks for helping. |

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP If dell doesnt have the drivers you need go right to intel, nvidia, ati, etc and get the drivers right from them. Thats the best way to get the most upto date and the right drivers you need. I never use the drivers from dell. |

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP Hi, not sure of my order number! Unfortunately I am registered Blind and can't find the receipt off Dell anywhere. I haven't even got any e-mails from dell that I have managed to backup with the order details on. They are saying it will be 15 working days, but something tells me that coming up to Christmas, there's no way they are going to get the PC to me till after Christmas. If I can find the details I will forward them to you. |

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP If tech support gave you a Case # or DPS # that could work too. Or the service tag or express service code. Any of those Billy or I can look up the information for your system with. The service tag and express service code are on the bottom of the system on a sticker. If you could get someone to read it off there it would help. The part that puzzles me is that everything was working fine with your system prior to your attempt to install XP and then all of a sudden they are exchanging the system for this. I take it troubleshooting was limited given that you are blind. Quote:

I wish I could edit my earlier posts to say this, but the new management doesn't seem to see the need to let us..

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP Hi again. The Dell technical support were actually very good. I explained that I am registered blind and the guy talked me through doing some simple things, like removing the memory stick on the back of the PC and then disabling the flash cache mode and also changing the sata setting to ata. Also we run a full system diagnostic using the built in programme, but this revealed no problems. The system, I think, was not runnning ok from the get go; considering it is a relitively high spec machine and running what is supposed to be Microsoft's best operating system yet it was running very slow and was taking ages even starting up! Also I have some specialised software that I use to help me access a PC and this is not compatible with Vista, only XP. There's no way I'm paying nearly £1,000 to upgrade my speech software and magnification software, I'm sure you can appreciate this is very costly. Eh, thanks for taking time to help though, I do really appreciate every bit of help that comes my way, thank you. I will certainly see if I can get you the service tag number off the machine, hopefully tomorrow. I will also see if I can find the receipt from Dell, that will give you all the information you need. Oh, the PC is in my wifes name, she bought it for me through her business. |
