Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi Thanks for the instructions. I did however find one slight problem, I got to the point where I select service pack 2, which it slipstreamed and then when I tried to add the drivers the only one that came up that resembled what you said was icha8m-E. I guess once the process is complete I can choose the option to crate a bootable ISO using the stuff that has been saved?

My mom got both my brother and my sister laptops similar to mine (HP dv9000t). It was a good price on Ebay. Both come with XP MCE and I have no plans to switch them to Vista. However they come with 2g of RAM and I only have 1g. You never know, one of the 2g kits could mysteriously fall out of one of them and land in my DIMMs. I mean these things happen

I think you had to select "make bootable ISO" at the begining, but let it do it's thing and see if you have the option at the end..

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Nice! Yeah the ones I got were refurbished with a 3 month warranty. 1.6g C2D (T5200) plus 2 x 100g HDDs. Unfortunately at 5400RPM's. Kinda hard to find one that comes with a 7200. They have the dual lamp UltraBright display I really like on mine plus 2g's of RAM and a Geforce Go 7600 256mb (though one is going to drop to 1g of RAM somehow I think) 1g is plenty for XP IMHO but Vista could use 2 for sure. For around $860 each with shipping I thought it was a decent deal especially since mine was about twice that last year with less specs though I did get the T7200 @ 2.0g. It's definitely going to be an electronics kinda Christmas this year. I just hope I get the 1080p plasma I want!

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

There are gonna be a ton of Vista laptops for refurb... Vista simply suxors with a gig of ram compared to XP and the damned system is unstable..
This morning I was walking a customer through printing multiple pictures using Vistas photo gallery and the first time I opened the pic it opened with vista photo gallery, the second time it used office picture and fax viewer ..
I laughed because I don't "Have" to use Vista... But I would be totally ****** if I was stuck with it..
3 systems XPee'd this month so far..

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Actually Vista runs pretty good on my lappy. The main problem is it wont standby without giving a black screen I can't recover from after resuming. I tried a bunch of different "fixes", but nothing seems to work. The Areo looks beautiful on the bright screen so I have kept it. I don't care what anyone says, it's Vista's only real strong point. Building for someone else I would likely install XP unless they specified otherwise. I am seriously considering going back to XP on the desktop for gaming reasons. I need to make a SP2,RAID/SATA slipstreamed disk one of these days. Not sure what I will install on the new rig yet. probably Vista with a DX10.1 card. I'm figuring I might as well wait for prices to drop on the Penryns etc. while I'm waiting for the Nvidia 9 series to come out. February!

Aah, getting a step closer now! The machine has started to load XP, but there is a hitch now, it won't go any further than 65% and keeps asking me to ensure the Windows XP CD is in the CDROM Drive; can't move on from this point.

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi all. Well, got XP on my Vostro, just having some trouble now with drivers. Even though I've downloaded them from the Dell site I'm having trouble getting them installed! Anyway, I've downloaded the drivers yet again and will have a go at loading them again, just in case I have accidentally downloaded the wrong ones!

I had a hell of a time finding drivers for my hp, it took me 4 different hp model laptop drivers to get them.

Have a look at the first 2 posts in this thread, I put the links to the drivers that work there.
