Nothings permanent on a lappy anyways, so I thought it would be good practice...
I did notice one thing though, it decided that AVG isn't anti virus LOL..

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

All the other machines are SP2.. Not really any point in putting SP3 on em 'cause their all up to date anyways..
SP3 did save me slipstreaming the 90 some odd updates since SP2 though...
Nice to have a machine that has all the updates and anti-virus on it before you ever plug a net cable into it..

On my Vostro I have an Intel (R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controller 2850

On the gateway there are ICH7 Sata AHCI controllers

Did you install in IDE mode or slipstream the Sata drivers on that laptop?

OK, I read back and saw that. I see you used the ones I posted for the Vostro...

The Vostro doesn't have TPM (Trusted Platform Module)some of the Dell desktops do though

I did a few searches on the notebook forums and the consensus seems to be this error is directly related to the Atmel TPM and you should be able to disable it with no loss of functionality..

From the Atmel site
"The FWH/LPC interface is designed as an In-System interface used in communicating with either the I/O controller Hub in the Intel chipset or typically the PCI south bridge in non-Intel chipsets."

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Well xp lasted about 3 weeks, i got a full system error and couldnt repair it. This has never happened to me in vista before, so the question is do i put xp back on again or go to my normal vista install?

You didn't have an image?
If it were me I'd try XP again to see if I could duplicate what caused the error, but I'm weird that way..
As a matter of fact I'm re-installing XP on my Gigabyte P35 as we speak to see how it likes SP3 beta..

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

I think it started when i was missing a dll file for some software. I downloaded the missing file online and placed it in the system32 folder. Then when i came back a few hours the laptop wasnt running right so i restarted and that was the end of it.

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi guys, sorry to mither you all again, just got a little question this time! I've noticed that when I plug the Vostro into the mains supply the display becomes brighter and is more visable and of course when unplugged the monitor dimms somewhat. I can't find any setting on the PC that will allow me to disable this option so the monitor remains at full power even when the PC is not plugged into the mains. I am running XP on this machine now - up to today with no problems - is there an option anywhere in XP that allows me to disable this power save option and run the monitor at full power? I am aware that this will reduce the battery life, but would prefer to have the monitor brighter. I've not checked the bios yet, but suspect it might be in there!

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

You guessed right, if you go into the video settings in the bios, you can change it there, the default is 3 out of a scale of 8 on batteries..
