Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

The other option that I find works is that while running on battery you just set the brightness all the way up. The QuickSet utility (assuming you installed it) will allow you to set a preference for brightness based on whether it is plugged in or not to the mains.

Glad to see you up and running.

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Thanks. Yeah, all is ok now, the PC that Dell sent me was a new system virtually the same, what I mean is the CPU is slightly higher than before. I initially had a 1800Ghz now it is a 2000Ghz, not that I'm complaining! It's running much better than before and I have installed XP with no problems; it is very fast now, I think much faster than Vista!

Ya, most people are finding the performance difference there between XP and Vista. Wait until XP SP3 is released. It is supposed to improve XP's performance by as much as 10% in some cases. There is a link to an article about it on the forum somewhere.

Speaking of which, I've installed the Beta (SP3) on a number of my machines now and it's working ok.

Hi again,

Sorry if I've asked you before, but where did you get SP3 from, I can't find it anywhere! Could you send me a download link or the site where I can get it from. I've even looked on the microsoft site, but can't seem to locate it!

*****edit**** I should note that there are people posting on that site that have reported some problems when installing it over SP2, I've only slipstreamed it and it works just peachy on all the machines I've put it on..

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi guys, wonder if you might be able to solve this problem for me. I've started to experience this problem now after installing XP. This dialog box keeps appearing. the instruction "0x7c910de3" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8", the memory could not be "read". This is appearing all the time and I can't find away around it. I've tried Googling it a couple of times with limited results; any ideas how this can be repaired or got rid of?

Shooting from the hip here, but I would try running memtest to make sure your modules are alright first .

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi mate,

Thanks for that. I had an idea that might be the problem, something was rattling roung my head saying "it's your memory" but wasn't too sure. I'll give the memory test a go and see what happens. I know it's done by pressing the Fn key during boot isn't it?

You can download memtest and burn the iso onto a bootable cd, the link is on this page
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
You put the cd in and boot from it and away you go...
It is a good idea to let it run for a long time as some memory errors won't show up till things get warm

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi,

Thanks for that, I've downloaded the ISO and will do the memory test tomorrow. Finishing work at lunch tomorrow, so will be able to spend a good few hours trying to sort the problem and my in-laws have my baby daughter, so I'll be able to concentrate too!

Re: 1700 Vostro with XP

Hi guys. I've had to reinstall my OS again, that seems to have done the trick. By the way guys, check out Dell's Vostro XP drivers again, they have been updated, there is now audio, graphics etc and they work too.
