| 1700 Vostro with XP My new Vostro 1700 arrived the other day and I was imediately impressed with the hardware. The short list is * IntelŽ Core™ 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB) * 17.0 inch Wide Screen XGA+ LCD Display with TrueLife * 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm * 128MB NVIDIAŽ GeForce™ 8400M GS * 160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive * Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini Card * 8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability * 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery And of course a pre-installed copy of Vista Home Basic.. Total came to $1097 CDN before taxes I must say I was rather impressed that it ran as fast as it did once I turned off all the eye candy, but I never intended to keep Vista from the get go. The fact that the machine wouldn't complete a defrag and the Nvidia control panel kept nagging me to change my resolution to the 1440*900 default (which it already was) helped the decision to ditch it in favour of XP Pro. I played with Vista for a couple of days just to make sure the hardware seemed to check out and I didn't find any gremlins, so I rolled up my sleeves and waded in. | Re: 1700 Vostro with XP I decided to leave the factory partitions alone for the first trial install in case I ran into a major hurdle. First thing was to make a slipstreamed XP disk using Nlite with the Sata drivers that I downloaded from the Dell site Drivers and Downloads The initial install went without a hitch and I got to work with the drivers.. The chipset from the Dell site worked well and seemed to be the correct one. Drivers & Downloads The trouble began when I tried the video drivers... The one on the site for the 1700 was the Vista driver and it failed to install.. I wound up using Nvidia's grforce go 101.34 that I found at Softpedia Download NVIDIA ForceWare GeForce Go 101.34 WHQL Driver for Win 2K/XP - Softpedia Later I read that the Video driver at Dells site for the 1500 Vostro worked, but I am happy with these for now.. The audio driver from Dell also failed, but the Sigmatel driver for the 1500 Vostro XP worked flawlessly... Drivers and Downloads All the other drivers from dell for the 1700 with XP worked as they should ( I didn't install the touchpad drivers as XP seems to handle that chore perfectly) |

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP Next up was cleaning up the Dell four partition nightmare.. I have no use for media direct or the Vista restore function so I deleted all four partitions and started from scratch with a 20 gig partition for OS and key programs and the balance of the 160 gigs for data. I did long formats on both new partitions.. This is simply an astounding laptop running XP.. It boots as fast as my E6600 P35 main rig ( I raced 'em) The wireless N is kickbutt fast and I haven't found a single fault with this combination yet.. I've ordered the second drive bay carrier and interposer from Dell spare parts so I can add a second hard drive at a later date.. Spare Parts Sales & Extended Service Sales 1 866 440 3355 Hard disk drive carrier no. 2: C7586 Hard disk drive interposer: XK231 Carrier to hard disk drive bay screws (3): No Part number sorry Carrier to hard disk drive screws (4): 2864D Total cost was $37.29 CDN delivered |

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP You should have fun with that, congrats! I remember when I got my 17" HP with the numeral keys (like yours) I wondered why the heck they put the touch pad off to the left. It soon became apparent however when I realized it was situated in the center of the regular keys therefore more natural feeling. I know mine would run better with XP just I am stuck on all the eye candy and actually runs pretty well with Ultimate. If I was strictly into gaming I would switch. One of these days I need to upgrade to 2g of RAM and I could use the second bay hardware too. I originally though I was going to RAID up on it at some point but there is no hardware RAID supported like I thought for some reason. Mine only came with 2 partitions. One was locked with the restore stuff. It was XP Home with all the HP ad crap and 10g so I deleted it and now only have one. I probably should have made one just for the OS, but I really don't keep anything precious on it. Enjoy!

I used nlite as you suggested and hand it up and installing in under 30 minutes. Never used that program before but it was breeze! Thanks again! |

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP got everything up and running but the audio drivers. I got the drivers from dells sit and you run it. it just ends so you reboot and it says it's going to install the drivers but then fails saying that this system does not support the drivers you trying to install. At a bit of a loss on what do here. I did upgrade to the soundblaster audigy but i think that's just software add on and not hardware. ANY help would be apprectiated. |

| Re: 1700 Vostro with XP Got the sound working! The only hardware error I had was a PCI Device. I simply right clicked and had windows find the best driver (took 5 minutes for windows to find online) and it turned out to be the advanced sound bus driver. After that was installed I was able to install the sound files from the 1500 and it worked fine. I also had to download the modem drivers for the 1500 as the 1700 didn't have them for xp |
