Asus Eee PC

I was thinking about getting one of these for use when I'm traveling, but after reading the reviews I'm now thinking about getting one to replace my 4 year old notebook. I read over a hundred reviews (Newegg, Asus EeePC Users Forum, Zip Zoom Fly) and very few were "less than rave reviews", and none were really negative. Most said the size was not an issue after they had used it for a few hours, and it performed as advertised. In fact, most owners said that it exceeded their expectations.

If anyone here has one, I would appreciate your thoughts on the device before I order one.

Thanks

Re: Asus Eee PC

I purchased a black 4gb surf that does not come with the camera.
The OS takes up space so there is about 1.3GB of space left on the internal flash drive.

Using the "Easy mode" that the Eee PC comes with was OK but got much better after I enabled the Xandros advanced desktop.

It's hard to resist the temptation to mod or increase the capacities of the Eee PC. After owning mine for a few weeks it has become clear that I don't use it much since I have systems all over the house including one in the kitchen. However, because of it's size and weight, I bring it everywhere I go and use it for internet on the go and that was the appeal when I decided to buy one. If I need to save any work or download any file, I can simply save it to the 2GB sd card ... too easy.

The forum on the following site is where most of the action is for this system.
There are a few that are adapting ubuntu and other distros to run on the Eee.

Re: Asus Eee PC

Thanks for the information yamawho. I have pretty much the same setup at home with systems in several different rooms. But my wife and I retired early and we travel extensively in a RV, so I have been trying to decide whether to continue to use my 4 year old notebook while traveling (the battery life is essentially zero), custom build a PC using a micro case, or buy something else. Space is definitely an issue, so a separate monitor and case is a last resort. I already have been to EeeUser.com got a lot of information from the forums.

The Eee PC seems to fit the bill of a fully functional PC with a very small footprint, but is very usable despite its small size.

Re: Asus Eee PC

You simply can not build a smaller system than this one.
It's about the footprint of a dvd case but is about 1" thick.

I played around with mine when I plugged in a usb dvd-rom drive and tried out Linux Mint and Mepis 7 live cd's. You could easily get a 8G or 4GB SD card and install another OS to that, even XP if your so inclined.
