Battery won't charge

Hello, I have a Dell 1505 and Recently the system will not charge my battery... i can run the system with the cord plugged in but as soon as i unplug it... it turns off on me. Could the battery be dead? Also, this is a computer that my ignorant sister uses so its full of spyware and bloatware..who knows..maybe more stuff... could a virus have caused this? Thanks for the help!

I could be 3 things that could cause the problem.

1. Dead battery from leaving it plugged in all the time
2. Charger is bad and wont charge.
3. Bad motherboard that wont let the batteries charge.

My dads work uses all dell and they are always getting motherboards replaced because they just stop charging.

The cheapest method would be to try ebay for a used motherboard or try the dell web site for parts replacement. Dell oddly enough seems to be reasonable for replacement parts prices. A complete keyboard is only about $30 for a laptop.

I would think you might get a motherboard for less than $100. Now wheteher you can remove and install is another issue.

More then likely it's the battery gone bad. Like SRT's first on the list, leaving the battery in all the time while it is running on AC power is bad for lithium ion batteries. I only replace the battery in mine when I am about to use it. Bummer on the warranty expiring last month! You are probably looking at around $100. You might try fleabay. I have had good luck recently getting reasonably priced parts there.

Also check your BIOS...sometimes you can recalibrate the battery in there (allowing a recharge of what's left) - if you can, you may get more life out of it.

I'm not sure if this applies to your model, but it won't hurt to look.

Turn the laptop over and remove the cover marked "C"..

Look under it and you'll see a little piece of padding over one of the chips... If there is a dent in the padding, it's from the tab on the cover pushing on it when you lift the laptop up (the cover is right where you naturally put your hand to lift it up)...

Cut the tab off and it won't push on the chip anymore.. If it's bad (shuts off when the unit is moved) you can gently touch the tip of a hot soldering iron on each of the pins on the chip for a second or so to let the solder bridge any gaps..

I've fixed a couple of different models of dells that were having power problems cause by this and it only takes 15 minutes to do..

I can't seem to find what you are talking about in my laptop. Here's a pic of the underneath of my laptop.

Also, i can't seem to find an option to calibrate my battery in the bios.

Nevermind that... it showed as if it was charging but 30 seconds later the green light went off... and it did nothing to charge the battery again. If it helps shed some light, in the BIOS, under battery health, it says that the battery is performing normally. Odd.
