laptop or desktop I am thinking about gettting a new machine, I want something solid and good for gaming but not that expensive (at most $1000). What I am wondering now should I just get my desktop upgreaded or should I buy a new laptop, I've just got to know a good deal (HP DV9700t Laptop: Core 2 Duo 2.20GHz 2GB 250GB $1000), I am seriously thinking about this one, how do you like it. Or any other good suggestions please.

Re: laptop or desktop That looks like an excellent buy and a very nice machine. Today's C2D-based laptops I feel offer much better performance/$ compared to anything that came before. I'm basing that in part on my recent purchase of an Asus A8SC-B1 laptop, for $1200, which is less highly configured than the machine you are considering. I've been really delighted with its performance (although I should say I am not a gamer, and it is not particularly a gaming oriented machine). But based on its performance, I would project that your better-configured machine would be satisfactory to you in that respect. I should add, though, that the Asus' out-of-the-box performance, with Vista and all sorts of pre-loaded crapware, was very unsatisfactory. I reformatted, installed XP instead, and only the software that I wanted. It's been a delight ever since. If you think you might want to go that route eventually, check the HP website and make sure that XP-compatible drivers for its internal components are available for download. Regards, -- Al

Re: laptop or desktop Unless you really need the portability, I'd go the desktop route. You can build a very nice machine for under $1000, and the form factor will also let you upgrade incrementally, which you cannot do with a lappy.

| Re: laptop or desktop I agree with UM. If you don't need the portability, you get MUCH more for your money with a desktop.

Re: laptop or desktop If you're in for gaming, get a desktop. Much more bang for the buck, unparalleled possibilities to upgrade, much less hassle to get replacement parts in case something breaks down. Over the last months, I kind of dropped out of gaming after being an avid PC gamer for more than ten years. Hence, I got myself a laptop for the first time. Well, those were the times ...

Re: laptop or desktop I don't think one could get a decent gaming laptop for under a grand?? I'd go with the desktop. If you really need portability you can look into SFF PC's, but you'll probably have to come up a bit on the price.
