Did you try contacting the company? What did they say? Sounds like it's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Isn't the IR sensor behind a piece of redish tinted clear plastic?

Very Strange...

Very strange!!. I have an IR device attached to my Desktop m/c. It's on permanently but I've never had any bad experiences with it.

Moonlitfire, are you saying that you "felt" something just by passing your hand in front of the port, or, by touching the port?

As far as the lawsuit thing goes...I think people are sue happy enough. If I was severly injured I could understand pressing charges. No point in pressing charges for this. Like I said I'm content with my laptop.
Yes, but have you contacted the company? I mean - there's no point in whining about it here if all you're gonna do is make it seem like the company is producing laptops that could kill a person. Why not give them a call and see what they say?

Like I said before - Have you contacted the company about this "problem"? If not, then I see no reason for you coming here and telling us all this. There are many users whos minds can easily be manipulated when seeing such things as "I was using a laptop from CompanyX and its IR port shocked me. Guess I'll turn it off." Now seeing this the person will think to himself - oh those laptops zap people so I guess I'll warn my friends and relatives of this to not buy from CompanyX. Get my point?

But the people who really need to know about this are the manufacturers.

Interesting though it might be, I don't think anyone here can see credence in your situation until you report this to the maker, and then, report back here with their response!
There are 000's of users out there with 000's of IR ports all working normally.

Most of us here are probably thinking "Static!"

This seems to go nowhere,

I for one believe MoonlitFire, he's been a long lasting member of these forums and a great sport on IRC too. I don't see any reason to come here and post his being shocked by the IR port of his laptop other than to look for other users that have had the same experience. I don't see anything wrong with that either and I'm sure MoonlitFire has contacted the company warning them about this problem, and by telling us these facts he can only gather opinions and experiences from others. But some people seem to misunderstand the post he created as being a way to move others away from the company. IIRC he stated he is very satisfied with his laptop, and just disabled the IR port since he has no need for it anyways.

So lets all have a beer here and hope the company responds to his and others experiences with bad IR ports on their laptops.

Thanks for the heads up MoonLitFire.

I never liked wireless ports. Security reasons.

I was simply giving people a heads up. As far as contacting the company goes, that is something that I have done already, basically what they told me is to send the thing back....not going to happen #1 i'm in Iraq(mail sucks here...enough said) #2 I don't use IR for anything and its disabled and no longer giving me a shock. Several other people in my unit here have the same laptop or laptops with an IR port on the front and about 3/6 I know have been shocked by the IR port...out of all 3 of those 1 of them owned the same laptop I do.

Even if I was to re-enable IR and use it, in order to transfer files you have to have a direct line of sight with no obstuctions to the other IR port you wish to do this with. With my wrist in the way I couldn't use this feature and type on the laptop at the same time. There would be no point in me having the feature enabled until I was ready to send files or whatever. I think its a bad position for an IR port to be all together. Oh well....Not like I don't have built in wireless networking capabilities or I can't network directly via crossover cable or patch cat5 cable and a hub.
Did NO one read his posts?

He already stated he contacted the company and they wanted him to send the laptop back, which he cannot do due to being in Iraq!

This guy was giving a friendly warning to people and you guys jump on him for not doing something he already did!
