Having worked with the IBM X series thinkpads at my customer sites, they are nice, IF you don't need to cary around floppy and cd/dvd drive.

To utilize Floppy drive or CD/DVD drive, you need to have an X series "Media Slice." Usually not included. When you snap this on the bottom or the laptop, the machine becomes rather thick and at that point your better off with a T40/T41 which has larger screen, and built in ultra slim bay for CD/DVD and can even take floppy. And the T40/41 is not much thicker than the X series.

Btw, having the DVD drive with me is nice at the airport or on long flights for entertainment when my work is done.

Enter the thumb drive. MV has some good points. If you will be very mobile and require to obtain data form another source say in field work and adequate size thumb drive might be better than having to use a cd etc.
