New Asus Eee PC

New Asus Eee PC 701 an ultraportable laptop that doesn't costs much ...

The Eee PC doesn't use a Microsoft operating system, which is part of the reason it's so inexpensive. Instead, Asus supplies its own Linux-based graphical user interface. The laptop also ships with some 40 applications, which is arguably more than you'd get with a standard Windows laptop. It includes Firefox for browsing the Web, Skype, OpenOffice and SMPlayer for video playback.

Obviously, it being a Linux machine, users can download any amount of open source software -- so long as it'll fit on the hard drive. The Eee PC is theoretically fast enough to run Windows XP, which is great news for those of us without beards.

Re: New Asus Eee PC

I saw one of these at a local computer store yesterday.
The screen is very small but with the 800 x 480 res I was able to read the text in Firefox OK.

There was no wireless around so I wasn't able to test the internet connection. As I was pondering the 399$ price I couldn't help but wonder if I could ever get this system to print on a networked windows printer.

If this system was at Bestbuy or FutureShop, I might have purchased it since I could return it ...

Re: New Asus Eee PC

I think the price of these is supposed to be $299, so maybe in a couple of months they will come down.

"Asus had initially said that the Eee PC would start at $199, but they're thinking now is more like $250 for the 8GB flash drive version and somewhat more for a 16GB version. They're still looking at late August for availability of the device, and it should be offered world-wide. I hope Asus can do a good job in making this device widely available, it's really quite compelling for the price and it will be interesting to see what type of people look to buy this."

Re: New Asus Eee PC

I decided to get one of these last week.
It's a black Asus Eee PC 4G with 4GB ram and wireless.
Paid 295$ cdn but it came without a case
Specs here ...
Asus Eee PC [EeeUser Wiki Home]

I'm still waiting for the SD card that I ordered which will increase the memory by 4GB.

So far I played around until I screwed it all up with the changes I made and the apps I downloaded. I did a system restore by pressing f9 on boot and selected restore ... it took about 15 secs and all was back to default.

I needed to add the wireless connection but after that it remembered my key however, I need to enable it when I start up.

It comes with a default "Easy Mode" desktop with large icons.
I installed the Xandros Linux advanced desktop this evening and all seems good. I followed a guide here ...
Enabling Advanced Desktop Mode [EeeUser Wiki Home]

I have had no problems connecting to my freenas server or print to a networked windows HP printer.

Many people are working on different linux distros for the Eee PC and some are running XP while others are running OSX Leopard.

Here is the link to all the action ...

It's about time!

I hope each and all the local elementary schools order 1000 of them.

Not sure on the policy these days about posting links to these types of sites ...

jaketerminate, yes it does come with Xandros but the unit only works in "Easy mode". If you want to enable advanced desktop mode, you need to do a few things ...

That is simply AMAZING. I'd never try it, though, as all my attempts at volt-modding have been less than successful.
