New LCD screen for Dell Inspiron E1405

The damn cat knocked Mom's laptop to the floor this morning and fragged the display. I am positive that is what's wrong since you can actually see the splinters where the screen shattered. There is still HD activity etc. I haven't hooked it to a monitor yet via the VGA port, but I know it will work that way. My question is does anyone know where to get a replacement part for reasonable? I have found a couple and they were both upwards of $400! It's a pretty new machine to find canibalized parts for but I thought I would throw it out here and see if anyone has any suggestions TIA

Most of the guys I know who fix up old Thinkpads get the displays on eBay, but you probably know the ups and downs of that.

She wouldn't have happen to purchase the system with Complete Care? If she did, you're golden.

Sometimes you can find gray market parts, but that runs the risk of being the part but maybe not functioning as expected. Sadly, this might be bite the bullet time.

I did not go with the Complete Care package. As I remember it was pretty expensive. Probably would have been about as much as I am going to pay for the new screen by now. Plus then I would have had to send it to Dell and waited for it to come back. I guess you can't have all my Dell parts laying around for me

ronbo 613, bajo, I did end up going the ebay route. I went with these people here.

I had some questions about the screen so I called the number on their page. There was almost no hold time and the guy I talked to actually spoke english and quickly was able to give me all the information I needed. Quite refreshing in it's rareness. The price is far lower then anything I found elsewhere. The part is supposed to be new as well. I will post how it turns out once I actually receive the screen, but so far I have been impressed with these people.

I will ask my brother what how much he replaced an LCD for his company for. He gets all the fun as he spends his days reviving old computers and salvaging parts from dead computer for others

Well the LCD screen arrived this morning. It was packaged well, new as stated and came quickly. I would easily recommend the company I linked to above. Price was very good, shipping at $12 (had to be about cost), and their customer service was excellent. I see why they have 100% feedback! Anyway I thought I would document the replacement as..well I'm very bored and have no life

First the computer in it's cat induced wreckage. Kinda hard to see in the pic, but it actually looks kinda cool with all the splinterd colors

Here is the lappy in it's disected state. Note the DIMM under the keyboard! Yuk! Though I doubt I will ever upgrade the 1g it already has anyway. Lots of tiny little screws, but all in all a piece of cake with a little care. I do so love taking stuff apart anyway! People actually get paid for this? Note the old screen with the splintered glass and the new one on top of the fedx box it came in.

Here it is good as new..Well good as before it was broken anyway. I am doing some updates while I have it since no one else will. There it is all done for $165!

Thanks It was actually quite simple so long as you keep track of the 20ish tiny screws that are different sizes. It could have been done without removing the entire screen casement from the rest of the computer, but I thought it was easier to work on without having to worry about the rest of the bulk. I'm glad it didn't happen to my HP Laptop. The high gloss/ high color gamut screen is much more expensive and since it has been raining so much here, I probably would have gotten soaked burying the cat!

So far it hasn't been a bad day. A successful operation plus I found three twenty dollar bills on the sidewalk this morning. Finders keepers!

Looks like you had no issues with the plastics or the rubber pads on the LCD panel. Great to see that everything went well for you bud.

Thanks! I was worried about the rubber pads, but it was easier then I thought. They were easy to remove with the tip of a utility knife blade and had enough tack left on them to put back without having to add adhesive.

bajo, I actually never even looked for instructions. It really wasn't hard for anyone with a degree of common sense and besides, kinda fun to figure out on your own I will admit to a little bit of relief when it was up and running though It went very smooth. So long as you keep the little screws in groups and don't mix them up or lose them it's a cake walk. Trying to find a dropped screw would be no fun they are teeny tiny. I was able to drive them with a sharp #1 phillips. A magnetized jewelers #1 would be ideal.

yup, but for me, upgrading the memory, cpu, and the video card was no joke.. specially when you need to take it all apart ..thank God Dell hsd posted all the service papers online.. memory was actually an exception, being easily 100% accessible from the bottom !
