| Which notebook to buy XP or Vista installed? I would like your opinion regarding the following: There are two new identical notebook computers (same mfg, model and specs) except that one has Windows XP and the other Vista. The one with XP has a lesser price than the one with Vista. Other than price, is there an upside to buying the one with XP? Or in the long run, is it more advantageous to buy the one with Vista?

| Personally, I would look at the price point compared to what you are getting with the Operating System. Comparing costs with XP and vista is hard because you need to compare the cost between XP Home or Pro to vista Home/Home Premium/Business/Ultimate. If the difference from whatever version of XP to whatever version of vista is the same as the cost difference of the two 'puters then I would probably go the XP route. That way I can be in control of what version of vista I want to upgrade to at a later date. |

| Thank you pointreyes. I will digest and think about what you wrote. Bofinn, there is enough memory to handle Vista; 2048MB PC4200 DDR2 SDRAM. The display is 17.0” diagonal widescreen TruBrite™ TFT active-matrix LCD display at 1440x900 native resolution (WXGA+) The Graphics is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with 8MB-196MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. I do not want nor need a high-end graphics ATI or Nvidia card in this notebook. Nor do I want a HDTV tuner installed. I have these things in my desktop system.

| My laptop came with home premium but I installed XP on it, I do like having the option to going back to Vista though (shame it can only revert to an ugly preinstallation with a bunch of crap on it, but still).

| It will be interesting to see if the RTM or OEM install dvd will accept and activate with the numbers off a laptop.. It sure would be nice to be able to do a clean install and save it to the restore partition like you can with XP on a Dell.

| It seems as if my question has become academic. I found an internet advertisement that listed a notebook that had all of the specs that I wanted for a far lesser price than the Toshiba I had been considering. I bought an Everex XT5000T from OfficeMax for $699 (this is $200 off the listed price) and consderably lower than the Toshiba under consderation. It has Vista Home Premium installed so my question has been resolved. I thank all of you who have responded bo my question.
