Well, after poking around on the HP website, it looks like the only provision they give you is to do the 7 Disc recovery set. Before running it they tell you to backup your data as it will be erased.

Now, backing up your data isn't possible of course.

Unless you can get your hands on a proper copy of Windows XP, you are hooped.

One other option is to take the drive out of your current system and slave it to a drive in another system, then copy off your files and then put the drive back and do the Nuke and Pave.

I suppose one other option is call HP and ask them for a proper Windows XP CD rather than the recovery set.

I highly doubt that. They charge for the recovery CD's so I don't think they are going to give you an XP CD. I just don't understand the method of not giving recovery CD's with new PCs. Problem is, if the hard drive is toast and you didn't make the recovery CD's/DVD's you're screwed because the recovery is on a separate partition on the hard drive.

I finally got rid of my old Dell laptop and bought an a new Compaq for a great price a couple of weeks ago. First thing I did was make the recovery CD's (12 of them, since the laptop has a CDRW not DVDRW, would have only taken 3 DVD's). It came with a 40GB hard drive, 10GB was the recovery partition so that left barely any room with all the crap they load on the thing. After making the recovery CD's I load a fresh copy of XP on the full 40GB drive. But if I ever sell it or need to go back to the original state I have the recovery CD's.

I'm not familiar enough with HP's recovery CD's to give you a qualified response.

I know some manufacturers will give you a Windows XP CD, Driver CD and Tools and Application CD to restore your computer.

The 7 Disc set you have there I really don't know how they work.

Not that I am aware of. I will leave the floor open to anyone else that might be able to provide you an answer.
