What kind of games are you thinking about playing, for light gamers i would at least get an Nvidia Geforce 8400GS, from experience I know that CRYSIS (of course, if you didnt know its a high end game) runs pretty good on an 8600M GS
on medium settings. You can get this HP for $1050 with an 8600M GS HP Home & Home Office Store - We're sorry!.

Re: What hp laptop to buy?

My son is graduating H.S. in a month. My brother and I pitched in and got him a loaded version of this

HP Pavilion dv6700z CTO Notebook PC*

2.2 GHZ Turion Gold Processor
15.4" Widescreen
3 GB DDR2 Ram
250 GB Hdd
8 x DVD Burner with DL
Nvidia 8400M GS
Bluetooth
Intel Wireless G
LoJack for 4 Years
Three Year Warranty
Built in Mic

All in all...I am an Intel person. My brother swayed me toward the AMD...and frankly...I am very impressed with the build quality of the machine and HP. I own a Dell Inspiron, myself...and the HP machine makes it look and feel cheap in comparison. If you want the Intel and 15.4...it's the dv6700t. For the 17" screen...the dv9700t. For AMD chip the last letter in the model is Z. Can't lose getting an HP right now. Excellent value and impressive machines.

Re: What hp laptop to buy?

Built what we wanted and purchased directly from HP over the phone. They were GREAT to deal with. Very satisfied...

Re: What hp laptop to buy?

I am totally happy with my HP. I hated all the bloatware HP istalled, so I reformatted the drive then used my Vista Home Premium disk from my desktop along with the cd key on the bottom of the computer to reinstall a fresh copy. All the dirvers are on HP's website. It runs much faster now to say the least.

Re: What hp laptop to buy?

Is it just me or what but at one time I wanted to get rid of the Vista HP installed so I resized the HD and created an additional partition (leaving the HP Recovery partition intacted) but afterward I tried to do a Recovery from BIOS (F11 key) but it just never worked afterward. I don't know if resizing or deleting the original partition created by HP caused this problem. I ended up returning it back to Sam's Club and just bought an HP (again) DV6885SE which comes with T8100 Core 2 Duo CPU and NVidia 8400M GS. This was on sale for $999.99 (regular price is $1149.99) and I thought this is a good deal. I wanted to put 64-bit Vista on it but I'm kind of afraid it might end up having F11 (Recovery) problem again.
