Win XP Pro and mouse function

I have seen an issue on several notebooks that I have not seen on a desktop. All of the notebooks are running Windows XP Pro. The annoying thing I want to change is that when the mouse cursor hovers over an item for any length of time the item is automatically selected by Windows as if I'd clicked on it. I'd like to turn this feature off but don't know where.

Thanks for your help.

You didn't say whether you are using a mouse or a touch pad or that other joystick thing ("the point") on the keyboard.

Sometimes the sensitivity on the touch pads on notebooks is too high. Normally you are supposed to be able to tap the touch pad and that simulates a click.

If you are holding your finger on the touch pad without moving it any slight motion of your finger up and down may cause a click.

Check the touchpad options in the control panel or maybe the accessibility options or the mouse options.

I have seen some reviews where people complain about excessive sensitivity of the touchpads and there does not seem to be a solution other than to get used to it.

This guy found a solution by upgrading the mouse driver:

It happens no matter which device I'm using. I normally use a USB mouse and it still has the problem. Some time ago I tried adjusting the touchpad sensitivity as you suggested but it didn't help.

Unhappy

I too have a small problem with my IBM laptop and a MS USB mouse.
Once in a while the pointer will jump to a new location off the screen or too some far point from where it was and I have to move my mouse around just to locate it.
This does not happen on my 2 desktops with XP and MS Optical mice, only my IBM laptop and XP Pro.???????

Its dirt on the touchpad. The dirt acts as a force which the laptop thinks is moving the cursor. You have to get every little tiny piece of dust out of the touchpad otherwise it does this. This can also effect straying mice across the screen, going the direction you dont wish to move in.

I have that problem with the mouse jumping around but not more than a couple times a day. I don't have a laptop so I don't think that is the cause. I think that is just optical mice but it could be worse if you use it on the wrong surface. I use mine on my desktop which is arborite and it has a very fine slightly fuzzy burlap pattern.
