ASUS Drive

Hi,

This might sound a silly qustion but I have this disk drive ASUS DRW-1814BL and sometimes when I close it I get a clicking noise from inside the drive itself? after the tray goes back in.

Can you please advise,

I don't get any clicking noises with mine - but there is new firmware on the ASUS site.

Clicking noises usually mean the drive is going bad. But, if it only makes noise when you first close it and it otherwise works OK, then just use it until it dies.

I have a lite-on drive that makes clicking noises everytime i turn my pc on. Its been doing it for about 2years and the drive works fine. If the drive works fine i wouldnt worry about it.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

The drive is still under warranty it has always done this from day one, but know when the disk tray goes back in it makes a loud click noise. Shall I send the drive back for a replacement??

If you live without the drive for a few weeks send it in and get a new one.

The shop where I bought it from dont seem to make that model of drive anymore even though I bought it in November 2007, Shall I send it back to ASUS and get them to replaced it witha new one??

Can you please advise,

Well you can send it back but the time you pay shipping and wait your better off getting one from newegg or something.

Thanks for the reply.

I've just got a replacment drive it sent to me brand new drive below.

Samsung SH-S203PRSMN 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (Beige/Black/Silver) - Retail

The drive seems fine but it says that it can burn DVD Ram disks on the box, but it my computer it shows up as a dvd rw drive and not ram drive? Will it still burn DVD Ram disks?

Can you please adivse,

Just because windows is showing it as a rw doesn't mean it doesn't perform the other functions. It's called a DVD RW, so thats what windows shows it as.You'll just have to try it.

I have a Sony Optiarc with the same kind of clicking noises but it still works for now, so Im not going to return it just yet.

Sometimes the DVD drive makes sound but they still work; sometimes they die soon. I have a couple of drives dying this way.

As regards the DVD-RAM, of course you need the DVD-RAM disk, and a software utility that can format, write, re-write and read from RAM disk. Usually, the drive comes with a bundled utility. However, some old versions of Nero Suite has this utility too. If your friend has such utility you can try.
