Absolutely get a widescreen monitor!

I held out with my Sony Trinitron CRT until last year when I switched to my Samsung.

Regarding quality: All sizes have their good models and their bad (lower quality) models. Cost is a usual indicator of this.

I have no problems with gaming with my monitor at its native resolution. For years, the speed of LCD's were slow and they were inferior. Not so anymore. As ATINUT says, avoid the cheap monitors in the size you choose.

All games "support" widescreen gaming. Visit the widescreengaming forums and website. As a few have said, there are adjustments available to make a 4:3 screen show as a 4:3 screen. Sometimes automatic and sometimes you need to do it manually. For example, when I play a 4:3 DVD, it shows automatically as a 4:3 picture in the center of my widescreen (black bars at the left and right for fit). However, if the DVD is a widescreen movie, then you have a wonderful show to watch.

Get a feature rich LCD. You won't be sorry. My Samsung has a 90 degree swivel feature for turning the monitor into a tallscreen monitor. You will find some people into tallscreen gaming. Quite the gas if you try it out and not something you can do with a CRT monitor. Also tallscreen mode is good for picture and image viewing and letter writing.

The panel maybe able to do 2ms GtG, but it will still be at Xms response speed. For example it can be 2msGtG/16ms response. The GtG time helps some but to me it is still too slow over all. Not to also mention the fastest it can be is 60Hz synched. I need 120Hz before my eyes feel a bit satisfied and this is even with a CRT!

I can't find the original test but the best LCD's are a minimum of 1 1/2 frames behind a CRT no mater how good the response time are. It is thought to be the electronics used to drive the LCD screen causing the delay. I think it was on Toms hardware but since they changed everything around you can't find anything by searching their site or Google. Its not just the lag issue, its also the quality. A good CRT will always deliver a better quality picture than a Plasma or LCD, IMO. CRT just looks sharper, with better greyscale.
Plasma and LCD are better than CRT in terms of size and contrast ratio and of course dont suffer from linearity problems.

I decided to hold off on my new monitor purchase until I actually get a new vid card and thats held off until Nvidia releases its next gen cards.
And I still havent played Crysis !

I've also decided to hold off on buying an LCD...my current Sony GDM-F520 21' CRT is still running fine after 6+ years so I don't want to change it out unless I absolutely have to (meaning until it breaks down)...I thought that LCD's had caught up to or maybe even surpassed CRT's but I guess that is not the case...seems like even the absolute very best of the best LCD cannot match a good CRT

anyone know the average life span of a good CRT monitor?...mine is coming up on 7 years now and I'm hoping it will last me another few years

Yeah, it depends on the usage and the environment, but between 10 to 20 thousand hours. The hotter the average environment, the faster the aging process.

You will see the signs when it passes its prime; as the phosphor and cathode age the picture will become dimmer (less contrast) and colour balance will change and loss of focus will occur. At some point it will become unusable for gaming due to the contrast problem (blacks will be too dark) and color balance problem (color will be washed out and wrong), but this happens only very slowly over a long period of time.

If any components fail (such as caps or transistors) then you may suffer picture loss or sync loss but usually this can be repaired cheaper than a new monitor.

Interestingly, plasmas also suffer from loss of focus over time.

Well its hard to say it will either up and quit on you some day or slowly loose contrast and or focus until you can't take it anymore. I have a NEC thats 10 years old and still going strong. Its not as sharp and crisp as it once was though. This was not a cheapo monitor, most low end CRT's blow in a few years.

hopefully mine has another 4-5 years shelf life...I havn't noticed any big drop off in color/contrast etc...when I do notice a little drop off I just go into my monitor's 'Menu' options and choose something called 'Image Restoration' which restores the monitor's color settings back to its factory default color (of course this gradually loses its effectiveness over time but so far it really helps every time I use it)

plus I always turn off my monitor at night or when I know I won't be using it for long stretches of time...hopefully this added a few hundred hours to the life of the monitor

Is that one of the "Multisync" models? With the monitor bezel that kinda turns outward at the bottom and the specially treated non-glare glass? Had one of those and it was an excellent monitor.
I'm running a Sony and a Dell now. The Sony is a very nice monitor, but isnt wide screen of course.

Standby is fine, it switches off power to the tube thereby extending the life of the monitor. (However it does use a small amount of power in standby mode which is contributing to the problem of greenhouse gas and ultimately climate change...)

Yes it is. I do not know the model number off hand and the monitor is at my dads house. Its was the best CRT I have ever owned. Its the only CRT I have ever see that has near zero geometry problems. At default settings all that needs to be adjusted is size and position and only a slight adjustment is needed and its mint.

If someone made a quality 21 inch CRT I'd buy it today! CRT quality has been going down hill for 6-8 years and as far as I know they are all crap now.
