best gaming LCD monitor

Why haven't you considered th Dell 2407 w/ HDMI? I think bajo got one very recently. I have it back home in India, and it's massive!

It this monitor good for gaming. Samsung 2253LW.

Costco has a great price of $259 and I have $25 in Costco money that would go towards it. I have been a hardcore CRT fan for years, but I am wondering it it is time.

Going with a bigger monitor is not in the budget (around $250 out-of-pocket).

My VIEWSONIC, already old again... can do 1280X1024 at 60HZ

Is there any cheap LCD out there which can do this 1280X1024 with 85HZ ??

Or even higher resolutions ??

Why, I love to play Grand Prix Legends...and with 85HZ it runs so much smoother in comparison with 60HZ.
GPL is limited at 36FPS, thats why too

Most monitors are now manufactured as "widescreen" now so youll probably be looking at a resolution a little bigger than 1280x1024. Check out something like this:

Yes, monitors are going widescreen, (tv's already are). However, LCD monitors
are 60Hz, some are 72Hz. I believe that's it. Tv's are now going to 120Hz. (No such thing as 85Hz for LCD). I have a 17" widescreen at 1280x768. (With the 17" LCD, I find horizontally, has lots of space, but vertically is too small - I would like more space.) I just got the Samsung 275T about 6 months ago - it's 27" at 1920x1200. (You wouldn't believe the size difference that 10" makes!) That's the range of most LCDs. The 20"-22" LCDs are 1680x1050 - which is about the resolution size that you want. The 24"-28" ones are 1920x1200. I think you would be fine with the 20" or 22" LCDs.

Polo, you still running that CRT? I would honestly suggest one of the Dell Ultrasharp screens in your choice of size.

They are one of the best around. If you don't like it you can return for a refund. I still think that many people worry too much about everything. 8/10 people who go from CRT to LCD experience a positive choice.

My guess is you are holding on to your CRT because it looks great and performs great. I loved my Sony Trinitron monitor so I know. You are thinking about an LCD upgrade but ....

Beware of your selection of an LCD monitor upgrade!

There are good LCD monitors and lesser LCD monitors!

Let's look at the difference.

All the LCD monitors are giving good response time performance these days so the difference is going to be in the colors you see. You want true 24 bit color. Read the article here on 24 bit color ---> Color depth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

To make an LCD cheap, 24 bit color is removed and in its place is lesser cheaper color. If the specs don't say 24 bit truecolor or 16.8 million colors than you will not see all the colors your games and video card are producing.

Examples - Two 24" monitors made by the same company:
1) Here's a monitor that does 16.8 million colors and it says so proudly in the specs along with a veiwing angle of 178° which is another indicator of the Good LCD panel - Click on the "Tech Specs" tab at this link ---> Dell 24" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor Look under "Color Support" and "Viewing Angle" and you will see.

2) Now. Here's a monitor where they are "hiding" the color performance. I wonder why. Again, click on the "Tech Specs" tab ---> Dell S2409W 24-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor The giveaway is the viewing angle which is not 178°. That means it is made from the inferior type of LCD screens.

So you have to ask yourself ---> Are you going to be doing letters and speadsheets and research all the time on your LCD monitor in your office? Or are you going to be Gaming on your LCD monitor in which you would want to see all the colors and shades and pastels that there are in the game that your video card can produce in their true glory?

Good link Trav, this is the thread I read last year when selecting my current LCD, a 22" HP 2207....was able to read comparisons with feedback from rl users rather than reviewers...ofc nothing beats personally going to store and previewing your choices.

I have both Dell's side by side I my old Dell which is a 2405FPW is a ultrasharpe and the colors are better and a better viewing angle, my second 24 is a Dell E248WFP and its way brighter (had to turn down Brightness to 50%) less veiwing angle and half the price, overall I like my older Dell!

I have the Viewsonic VG2030wm 20inch Widescreen, and I'm very happy with it. I got my widescreen last year.

I will say this much, some brands of LCD's are really great and other's I've seen are total junk.

From a gaming perspective, I bought my lg after watching a number of monitors running 3dmark06. The lg did not show ghosting, but some of the others that supposedly had better color, had some ghosting. For me, the ghosting was way more of a problem than perfect color accuracy (not that the LG is bad).

What I found in researching is that there really is no one perfect LCD monitor - you need to determine what is most important to you and go from there.

I just picked up a 25.5" Samsung T260. Won't be able to try it out till this weekend, the rest of the parts for my build are coming tomorrow.

This monitor is a beast!
