Can't uninstall Logitech USB Cordless Mouse...

Hi.......

Recently I noticed I have two mice showing in Device Manager. I'm currently using a Microsoft Intellipoint and my previous mouse was a Logitech USB Cordless. Here's the problem... I can't uninstall the Logitech mouse in device manager, or rather, when I do uninstall it, the mouse reappears in Device Manager on restart. There's nothing in Add/Remove Programs and I've tried uninstalling it in Safe Mode, removing all registry entries for Logitech, etc, but no matter what I do the persistent little thing keeps coming back.

I have a feeling Windows is recreating it from a backup file but have no idea where the file might be or how to edit it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mark

Other devices that offer some kind of mouse functionality will show up as 'HID compliant mouse' or similar; my Wacom tablet does this, so it might not be your Logitech in there at all.

Logitech mouse won't go away...

Thanks for the response...

The Logitech mouse also shows up in Device Manager under Human Interface Devices. I uninstalled it there also. In addition, I deleted all registry entries for Logitech using jv16 Power Tools Registry Finder. I'm convinced that the Logitech entries are either being recreated on startup by a Windows backup file, or, I haven't found all the places in Device Manager where it shows up, ie, unnamed HID-compliant Consumer Control Device or unnamed USB Root Hub.

It seems the next step might have to be removing ALL mice from my system, then reinstalling the Microsoft Intellipoint, which I want to avoid if possible because once you remove all the mice you're stuck with the arrow keys for navigation and sometimes windows appear during the fix process that aren't easy (or impossible) to navigate with just the arrow keys.

I found a MSFT KB article on the subject but it is long, vague and complicated. I've run through it twice now and both times the fixes were worse than the problem so I had to go back to my last Image File to recover. I'll admit this is a nasty problem to solve and one that doesn't really have any major negative effect on my OS. I've been living with it for over a year now so any permanent fix would be a bonus... still, I'm a clean freak and would love to get that Logitech Mouse out of my system for good. I haven't had the Logitech mouse for a long time and was surprised to see it in Device Manager. I've learned over the years that Logitech has very invasive, controlling software that is is hard to get rid of, kind of like a nasty booger you can't seem to thump off. Another example is Real Player. I don't like software that trys to take over my system and limit my options. I just bought a new Logitech Webcam and USB Headset (to use with Skype) but haven't installed them yet. This will probably be my last contact with Logitech until they get it together... they are a major pain in the butt.

If you do remove all mice and their software I don't think you will stuck without a mouse. Windows will use a basic mouse driver.

I just uninstalled my Dell mouse from my laptop and plugged in an M$ wireless one and it worked OK. Of course, it worked better when I installed its own drivers! But, it was only missing some functionality.

Also check your startup in msconfig. It's possible that something there is re-installing your mouse.

Thanks Geoff! True, Windows will install a basic mouse driver, BUT, only on restart and only for a corded mouse, and my Intellipoint is Bluetooth so no help there with the arrow keys. If I restart half way through the fix process then Windows recreates all the Logitech registry entries.... grrrrrrr
I also watch msconfig like a hawk.... nothing in there for Logitech.

I used to do a clean install about once a month to get rid of all the garbage but since I got jv16 Power Tools and Norton Ghost I haven't had to do it. Maybe it's time again, unless I can figure out a way to roust the Logitech mouse that's not even supposed to be there. The problem may be hiding somewhere in the unnamed Human Interface Devices and USB Root Hubs in Device Manager, some of them may be the Logitech mouse in disguise, but then that takes me back to removing all mice from my system and back to the problem of navigating with arrows.

Either I find a Windows backup file to edit out the Logitech mouse or do a clean install. Those are the only options I can see at this point.

Thanks again!

As I already said, my Microsoft WIRELESS mouse worked without any drivers being loaded for it. It just lost a bit of functionality.
I just deleted the Dell corded mouse, plugged in the wireless one, rebooted and Bingo!
Perhaps a bluetooth one may also work!

Anyways, if you Ghost it first you can easily get back!

True..... I love Ghost! It enables you to putz around to your heart's content without the normal consequences. I had Ghost way back when it used to be Powerquest Drive Image. Symantec's imaging software was so inferior to Powerquest's that they just bought out the company. I already tried uninstalling both mice from Device Manager and my Microsoft Intellipoint lost all functionality. That's how I ran into the arrow navigation problem. I've already spent enough time on this so that I could have just done a clean install! Fortunately I enjoy tinkering with my computer so no big deal. Everyone has been very helpful here.
