Canon MF5700 series printer - question

My old Okidata multifunction died this morning. As often happens, it jammed in such a way that I have to grab the partially-engaged page with both hands and drag it through the printer rollers. This requires so much force the paper often rips. This morning, the entire page ripped, leaving half a page stuck. There's no way to get to it.

I believe this is due to the ancient (Windows '95 era) driver that misinterprets page sizes and sometimes thinks it should be printing in legal. The printer then halts the job at that page, jamming it in an unusual place.

I am glad to get rid of it due to this and other issues.

I've decided to replace it with a Canon MF5700-class. I need a 33.6 fax with this. There are two models available locally: an MF5750 and an MF5770. The difference between the two is that the 5750 is USB while the 5770 is networked (a real bonus if you can afford it).

Problem is, I needed one today as I'm without a fax and cannot receive. The 5750 was available now, the 5770 was available on the web. Amazingly the 5770 was on a crazy low sale price, making it $50 cheaper than the 5750. I had to buy the 5750, but now that I have it I will be returning it for the 5750 when it comes in next week. It's unfortunate that I have to do this, but if the original retailer stocked the 5770 and matched their competitor I wouldn't have to.

My question is, on a networked printer, does it have all the functions of a USB-connected printer? I can also return the pricey USB cable? (They charged me $20 for a 10' cable!)

The Canon manual is for both models but says nothing about this. Note the 5770 has both USB and Ethernet connections.

I believe so. Just the option to now connect to a PC or router/network port is available.

It amazes me the amount I see USB cables for. A local mom & pops store sells them for about $3-5. Down the street at Best Buy, anywhere from $20 to $40 for a USB cable. Just incredible. Who cares if its 24k plated and supposedly error-free transmission, I've yet to get an error due to my USB cable messing up the transmission.

Yeah, not only is it a digital transmission method, there's ample error correction. The gold-plated USB cables were $5 more ($25). I should have looked at the packaging - I'm sure it would say "for more accurate data transmission" or something.

Thanks for the response.

Aha - found out something. It needs BOTH USB and Ethernet connections for full functionality.

Couldn't find this initially because I haven't installed the drivers yet - since I'll be returning this unit I'm keeping the CD sealed and downloading everything from the web.

The unit doesn't support PC faxing or scanning with the Ethernet connection. You must have a USB cable for this. It will only function as a printer with the Ethernet connection.

So I won't return the USB cable because I'm planning to do all my remaining faxing this way (via PC) and I might use it as a scanner.

P.S. The unit runs its own webserver which you can access at its IP address over any web browser. Cool!

Sounds nice. When my Epson bites the dust, my next printer will definitely have a network adapter. I guess you would have to have the USB connection for those other functions, didn't think about that.

I hooked up a wireless HP for a client a while back and that was pretty neat also. Just the power cord, and set the wireless setting on the panel to connect to the router. Pretty sweet.

Saw those wireless HPs here. It's the 7410. Retails for $700 here.

Actually the Canon 5770 retails for $600. I got it on sale for $349.99. $50 less than the 5750 that's sitting on my desk for now, but not for long.

Got it this morning. Very cool, and I'm using the shipping tape, manuals, toner cartridge etc. from the new printer to repackage the old one. If I didn't tell the store, they would never know it was returned because I had a new packaged model to use as a guide. The toner cartridge is new and sealed, the accessories bag has never been opened, and everything is in the same place the factory puts it. I even swapped out paper cassettes to avoid opening the accessory bag for a part that goes there.

The networking part is awesome - there's a remote UI webpage that allows you to alter every setting, checks paper levels, etc. You can also import and export fax address books.

There's one fishy thing though - the Ethernet setup requires a gateway address. Why does it need a gateway address if it isn't communicating over the Internet? I entered it, but I'm suspicious it's calling home to Canon. I put a packet sniffer on for a few minutes but it didn't capture anything - I may leave it run overnight.

I'm wondering if gateway address is just a required TCP/IP entry, regardless if the device uses it or not...
