My system is:
PIII 700@966 1.75 v
Leadtech GForce 2
256 megs Corsair CAS 2 @2/2/2/ 7/9
SB Live
2 Ultra 66 HDD's
Windows ME

This system has run perfectly since Sept, but yesterday two problems developed.

Problem 1- After 45 minutes to one hour the CPU temp climbs from its normal of approximately 85f to about 107f. This happens if I'm working or if it's sitting idle. I checked and both case fans, the PS fan, and the fan on the Alpha are all operating normally. This happens using either MBM5 or AsusProbe. If I reboot, the temp in the bios shows no increase and the temp returns to normal in Windows, but will rise again. Before you mention it I clocked back to 700 with the same result.

Problem 2 - The same time as the temp problem occurred, my HDD's started performing erratically. Using HDTach and Sandra, the speed drops from the usual 22 to 24 megs/s to 3 to 4 megs/s and seems to bounce all over the map. This is with the Intel 6.03 drivers. If I use the native ME drivers, the performance drop does not occur, but the speed never goes above 8 megs/s. This has been true with the Windows drivers since I built the system.

I can understand a tempature sensor or an IDE controller going south, but not both at the same time. I can see no connection between the two.

The only thing I did before the problems started was th run the registry checker in System Tools. Any one out there have any Ideas? I wouldn't mind reformatting and reinstalling, but i really don't see this as a fix.

Thanks,
O'Dell

Odell my first thought is power supply, what do your voltages look like...? From your post it seems as though something is going south and I had a power supply go bad and all kinds of stuff started going crazy...

I had the same thought, but the voltages seem good. At least they're about the same as they always have been, with only minor fluctuations. Good thought though, and I'll check it out. Thanks.
