The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

Laser Printers-What's a good $200 one?

Not used everyday. Not expected to go through more than 1,000 pages a year. However, I have had it with inkjets. I hate them. I don't need color printouts, I do need a realiable b&w printout when I ask for it, not this "Oh, I have to clean the nozzle again-nope, that didn't work, have plenty of that expensive ink-hmmm, time to get another inkjet printer."

What are good laser printers for my needs? The printer will be getting used more as the years progress. Plan to use USB connectivity with one of the computers being the print server.

Printers brands I'm interested in:
Brother
HP (not to thrilled on HP but for laser printers they are good-just hate their software support)
Lexmark
Samsung

I got a samsung 1440 and I'm perfectly happy with it... nice and crisp prints, and cheap.

If I was you, I would avoid the ones with the open paper trays. Although they seem to be the cheapest, these paper trays attract a lot of dust, especially if you don't use your printer that often.

Samsung ML1710 first page out is pretty fast text quality is decent and has probably the smallest footprint of all laser printers, tray loader as opposed to the horible HP 5L/6L vertical feeds. Can be had for less than $200 US got mine for $200 CDN only thing is that it's a USB only connection there's an ML 1750 that has both USB and parallel port connections and is a little faster but a little more expensive.

USB or Parallel?

USB--HP1000 or 1100 (the 1000 is an excellent printer, I use ours daily)

Parallel--HP 1150 or 1200se (if you can find one, closed out model)

IMO, stay FAR away from anything with a Brother name on it. Same goes for Lexmark. Samsung seems pretty good, and I've heard good things about the low end Minolta's, although I've not used either.
