LCD question on Native Resolution

Ok I just ordered the 20.1" Dell 2005FPW LCD. I liked the reviews on this unit and it sounded like I was getting a good deal for the price I paid($434). I know the Native resolution of 1680x1050. I am wondering if I lower this when playing games if it will look kind of funny. My video card is a 9800 Pro 128meg which I know supports this resolution, but I am worried if I run the games in the Native res. that I will take a performance hit. I would love to updgrade the video card too, but that is out of the question. Everything else that I do that Native resolution will do just fine.

MMMM I can't wait to check out some of the HD trailers from Quicktime 7 that I have with that new LCD.

Red face It depends on the monitor.

It's not a big deal, but it does look a little funky to lower the resolution. It's worse if it's using the VGA input, and it's not so bad playing games. It looks really bad for text and stuff, but it's not horrible. My suggestion is to turn off some eye candy so you can get to native resolution. It's pretty much the only way to go with an LCD if you want perfection. Games don't look bad @ 1024 x 768 on my LCD, when native is 1280 x 1024. I can see a difference though, and I run native when I can. I think you'll be Ok with running lower res when you have to. Some monitors look REALLY bad out of native though!

I have the same fear with my x800xl and 2005fpw, i'm playing with some overclocking now, I have not reached instabiliy yet even with 444/540, but I will continue going. I am hoping this clock will help me a bit ovearll with the new monitor and gaming, so far i've achieved 500 extra 3dmark05 points.

Well I'll be using the DVI inputs for one thing. I am running my games right now in 1280x1024 so I am thinking if I just run it at that from the beginning then I will never know what I am missing then if I ran it on the native resoluton.

Aruthra, you just can't do that, it'll bug you forever!! +, you'll have black bars on the side of your screen.

Deer_slayer, could I get pics of the difference between dvi and analogue?

Red face I don't have a camera good enough to do that!

I don't have a camera good enough to take a sharp enough pic that you'd see it. I'd need probably a 4 megapixel camera before the difference showed up on it. I only have a 2 megapixel camera, with NO focus adjustment! It's a garbage casio exilim. If my friend comes over, I'll borrow his Kodak camera, that would do it. It's not something that would be obvious in a picture anyways, you'll probably ned to see it in person! :o

Red face It is kinda confusing.

Yes, the DVI port can be adapted to VGA, and crank out an analouge signal. If you use an adapter to go from the DVI port to a standard 15 pin D-SUB VGA connector, it cranks out an analouge signal. Now if you plug in an LCD, and use the DVI cable, it will be a digital signal. My video card has 2 DVI plugs, but I have the second one hooked up to my KVM switch using an adapter. This does result in a little worse image quality. Now if your video card has a D-SUB 15 pin plug, (which it does) it's STRICTLY analouge, can't be used for a DVI plug. Hope that clears it up. :o

Uh.. sorry, I think I need graphics o.O.

Anyway, I hope this monitor is DVI, I think it is. I don't know if my current sony is analogue or not.

It's directly plugged into the vpu, so will it be the same if the dell is dvi or will I need an adapter? Maybe my x800xl has 2 different ports, no clue, haven't looked at the back for a while.

Not to worry the 2005FPW has DVI and my card supports the DVI. Jag if you look at the back of your card you should see two ports the blue port(15 pin standard) and a white port that will have 4 small circles with the other holes which is the DVI port. Dude your system is better then mine and I think you will be just fine. Hell I think I will be just fine on the games too. Sure I may have the black bars, but then again I probably will not notice them anyways. I know HL2 has a Widescreen option to set, so I can always do that for that game.
