MX5000 desktop. the plot sickens :yuck:

I know I have ranted about this cordless desktop before, but I am just not done yet! Man what crappy engineering. I paid almost $150 for the set and right now I am typing on my old MX700 desktop via PS/2 ports. Aside from the many annoying flaws in the design like double strokes on the keys after it sits a few minutes, hesitation to type, volume control from hell (it's supposed to be touch sensitive but you have to rub it like Aladdin's lamp and hope it either goes up at all or doesn't blow your windows out), the media keys are terrible, they either don't work or are small and tedious even when they do. I bought the set hastily when I was mad and fed up with the one I am typing on now for dropping connections. So the end came when the POS USB receiver started failing. I would be in the middle of something and it would just disconnect bye bye mouse and keyboard. I would then have to pull it out and jiggle it a bit and it would work a little longer (same thing in all my USB ports) Finally it got so bad that I had to stack a couple of little boxes so it would push up on the dongle which is the only way it would work at all to finally giving out all together.

Logitech support was actually a little better then I was expecting. I just had to fax them a copy of the order confirmation from TigerDirect and they are going to send me a whole new desktop for no charge. I hope to god they have done some revisions on it! Anyway, anyone thinking of buying this desktop, caveat emptor!

I'm not a big fan of cordless devices.

I have 2 MX700 and one MX1000 mice.

The MX1000 is crap.

I only use one MX700 and the other systems have wired mice again

I have to say I like the MX1000 laser way better then the MX700. The mouse was actually not a problem, (so long as it was connected) it was all keyboard problems. For me I need a wireless desktop since I usually work (if you want to call it that) kicked back on my bed/sofa and wires would be a real drag. Sitting at a desk I would prefer corded for the keyboard at least sure. so far the old MX700 setup I am using now has had no problems. I am hoping hard that the replacement will be an improvement. The logitech guy seemed to think it would be an revised edition, but wasn't sure. I will just have to wait and see I guess.

I prefer the MX700 over the MX1000.

I got the MX1000 for my son and I was using his system one day and couldn't believe how bad it was with the Logitech and MS drivers. I went to Staples and purchased a new one to see if his was defective ... same crap. Returned the new one and discovered that if I cleaned the laser lens with a Qtip, it was working as good as the new one I just bought. However, my son didn't want me to put it back, he went back to using the MX510 corded.

yeah when the lens gets dirty it tracks like hell. The optical is less likely to do that, but now that I know about it I just use a corner of my shirt or something and it will work fine again. I am just used to the feel of the MX1000 now plus it seems to work better with Vista for some reason. I have the bluetooth model too which might make a difference.

Ok I am about to go to Logitech headquarters with a baseball bat. I called their damn tech support and the guy was actually ostensibly helpful and agreed to replace my POS MX5000 with a new one on condition I send them a fax of the original order confirmation from TD. So, I send it to them with the proper support code and a week later nothing but crickets chirping. So I call them again, they say they don't know anything about the fax I sent them so I send it again. I still can't get them to confirm they received it. I am sooo ******. The old wireless just met with like an accident. I guess they don't fare well after being slammed on the floor almost as hard as I could. the skipping strokes and dropped reception rather infurates me as the many loose keys and other smashed Logitech garbage laying on my floor would dictate, AAARRGG!

Re: MX5000 desktop. the plot sickens :yuck:

Its funny you warned me about the MX 5000. I don;t have any complaints about the keyboard.....however the mx 1000 mouse has some serious issues! Won;t stay connected! Thank God I had the MX revolution . works great. I hear that Logitech is comming out with the MX 5500 which is a revised keyboard set with the new MX revolution mouse!

As for Logitech support, They stink!!!! They said they will replace my MX 5000 set only if I ship it to them. I will have to wait till they recive it before they could send a replacement set. I asked if I could recieve the new MX 5500, they said NO.
You should try a Microsoft set. At least there support is #1! I once had a problem with a bluetooth mouse from Microsoft, they replaced with a keyboard & mouse combo!!!

Good Luck!

I got a logitech wireless keyboard, mouse kit and the keyboard is great but the mouse sucks. No matter how much i turn the speed up on the mouse its still slow and it lags. I mite end up dumping the mouse and go back to a wired mouse.

Re: MX5000 desktop. the plot sickens :yuck:

With the MX 1000 that I have I love it. I found that it didn't like it if I went too far off to the right or left of the receiver. With my desk setup now it isn't an issue though and I never have a problem with dropping or anything. As for the track speed I never noticed if it was slower or faster since I bought it but I will definitely give the lense a cleaning. I need to find another mouse to replace my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer as I am getting tired of it. I was at Logitech's website the other day and it was less than helpful and missing half the mice that I could otherwise buy at the store. I am puzzled about that one.

I do have a cordless set for my TV computer for obvious reasons, but I can't for the life of me see why anyone would go through all the hassle for a desktop....
We've had three different sets that all wound up in the trash..

Exactly. I can live with the one wire of the keyboard because it really doesn't move much. The mouse wire goes all over the place though. It was a god send to get rid of it and go wireless.

Anyone had a chance to use the new MX Revolution from Logitech? I'm thinking of picking one up for my other computer.

The range on the bluetooth model is way further then you would ever need and I really never had a problem with the mouse. It was the keyboard that sucks and I especially hate the volume control. I finally got my replacement and it's keyboard isn't quite as bad. Also Setpoint seems to work better under Vista for some reason. Funny I assumed I would need the special Logitech bluetooth receiver to run my desktop, but when I was in Va last week I brought my desktop and forgot the receiver (whoops) however my laptop has built in bluetooth and I was able to connect them using it.
