Not enough power from the USB ports

I was helping my friend hook up a ipod today. For the strangest reason the device manager read the ipod, but it wouldnt pop up any where else (IE: My Computer, itunes)

After a bit of experimenting i unplugged all other USB devices (wireless card and a printer) and it worked! I then plugged the wireless card back it and it disconnected the ipod.

We are using a Dell computer that we put a Intel Pentium D in. It uses alot less 'juice' then the old processor, a Intel Pentium 4 3.0ghz Prescott.

Well the whole point of this is, is there anyway i can get more power to the USB ports without harming anything? He has already spent alot of money on computers and i dont want him to have to buy anything new.

Thanks for your responces.

the iPod should be recognized no matter how much power there is, if it isn't it might be a bigger problem. Does the iPOd work in other computers?

If the problem were not enough juice, it would just charge reallllly slowly.

It worked perfectly fine on another computer. But it only worked with no other USB devices plugged in on his computer.

I never said it was the ipod.

I just want to get this working for my friend without having to spend anymore money.

I didn't mean the cord on the Ipod, I meant one of the other device cables.... Have you tried the other devices one at a time to see what one is stopping the Ipod from working properly?

i know you don't want to spend money, but one choice is a cheap USB2.0 hub, they aren't too expensive, and they are normally powered, that might help the situation
