I have Windows XP Home Edition and I got this message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys" Someone told me to try to get into the repair console by pressing r at the first windows setup screen when you put the install cd in, but it continues to load all the setup files, and then it brings up an error message: "File SETUPREG.HIV could not be loaded. The error code is 32768 Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit." Things that I've tried to fix my problem but didnt work... 1. Made sure all my connections were in the right place and tight. 2. Installing new OS (Windows XP Professional, and Windows Server 2003). 3. Trying 2 different harddrives. 4. Flashing the BIOS. 5. Getting into the repair console If someone could help me, I would be VERY happy...

Bottom line, what are you trying to accomplish? Simply get some data off of the hard drive? Erase the hard drive and start over?

OK, you are assuming I know what all you have done to what. I don't. Start at the beginning. How many machines, what Operating systems, What did you do to what? Unless you start at the beginning and take it step by step no one here can possibly help extricate from whatever has happened.

sry if i came across as rude, im just mad at my comp What i did... 1. My PC was running Windows XP Home all fine and dandy 2. I put my computer into a new case 3. I made sure all the connections were right and that they were all nice and tight 4. I turned on my computer 5. It said "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys" 6. I tried rebooting 7. I tried reinstalling Windows XP Home 8. It brought up this: "File SETUPREG.HIV could not be loaded. The error code is 32768" 9. I tried to reinstall again 10. I tried Installing Windows XP Pro 11. That brought up a similar message that i dont remember off hand 12. I tried Installing Windows Server 2003 13. That brought up another annoying message 14. I tried all that again with 2 different HDDs 14. I downloaded the BIOS for my motherboard (Abit BD7) on my old computer running windows 98 15. I flashed the BIOS (yes I did do that part right) 16. I tried everything above flashing the BIOS again 17. I tried changing the IDE cables from my CD-Drives to my HDD and vice versa 18. I put my HDD into my old computer running windows 98 19. My old computer couldnt display that HDD for some reason 20. I tried to binary wipe the other 2 HDDs so i wouldnt lose my data on the original HDD but it wouldnt initialize And now im still trying to figure it out...

No, not rude at all, just confusing. So is what is happening. As to Win 98 not being able to see your old HD, #14,, was the HD formatted using NTFS, if so that is the reason Win 98 can't do anything with it. Win 98 cannot use an NTFS formatted drive. Back to the initial problem. Since it occurred when transferring your WinXp rig to a new case, the problem has to be there. If the old WinXP hard drive is spinning up, all is probably not lost here. I suspect your installation into the new case is the problem. Items 5 and 8 suggest to me that there is a bad physical connection to the hard drive, or, that the motherboard may be shorting out someplace on the case. Or that the board may be "bowed" in the case. Check to see that there are no screws stuck under the motherboard, or that the motherboard is not grounding out on one of the risers. I would consider removing the motherboard from the new case and trying to boot with it out of the case. That way we can see if the problem lies with the mounting of the motherboard.

You said you were booting with the xp cd, so I'm assuming that you are trying to install windows. What immediately comes to mind is you may need to load the sata drivers for your hard drive ( if it's a sata one of course) Post back here with your motherboard type, hard drive etc, and someone will be able to help you.

Re: Windows Boot Problem hi all im having a hard time getting my laptop to work!, Ive got an Advent Laptop, i cant tell u what the actuall statistics are although ill try and post them to u asap. If you could help me with the following it would be much appreciated.! the only problem is i cant access nothin on the laptop so i need to juggle in between tryiing to fix it at home and coming down to the library which is frustrating!!! right..i was using the pc fine 2 days ago and the thing froze on me so i decided to hit ctrl+alt+del to see what the problem was. nothing happened and the task manager didnt come up so , i shut the pc down and tried to restart it although all i got was A disk read error occurred ,press ctrl+alt+del to restart. which i did although it kept on giving me the same thing over and over again.I have looked for help on forums which i have tried and my initial decision was to reinstall Win XP with the boot up disk. I have tried although when i press R to repair i get the windows recovery process bar at the bottom but it stops and after a few seconds i get "file setupreg.hiv could not be loaded error code is 51237. when i enter the bios from the help that ive seen there where many possibilities to repair it and that was to make sure the HDD and CD-ROM where in the right order bla bla bla which i made sure it was in boot priority. When i change the priority to one of them, it seems like the boot disk is going to work as i get the logo for PC Angel...which is what i got the last time i reinstalled xp. so i took a deep sigh of relief although a few seconds later and a black screen i got this "stop: c000021a{fatal system error}the session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectadly with a status of 0xc000026c (0x00000000 0x00000000) the system has shut down. ive also heard that the IDE cable might be in the wrong but im sorry to say im quite computer literate but this whole thing is ageing me lol! i dont know what the hell to do, can someone tell me exactly whats wrong if possible pleaseeeeeeeee!!!! i will appreciate it big time. remember i cant access anything ,so any commands i meet need to type in ,i dont know where i should type them in . Im sorry i had to give u my life story but i thought it better if i started from the beggining and them you guys can understand me. any feedback asap will be awesome, cheers!
