XFX Shatters the 3DMark World Record

What do you get when you pair an XFX NVIDIA GeForce 6800GT SLI card, a special liquid nitrogen cooling system and 2 determined Finnish overclockers??...how about a new 3DMark World Record score of 12,483

"they were able to increase the power supply to the memory modules and achieve a core clock of 575 MHz with a memory speed of 1300 MHz to produce a screaming 3DMark Score of 12,483"

"special liquid nitrogen cooling system" Well I dont see what it proves except that we are facing some real depressing limits on what we can do on air.
Sorry to sound so unimpressed, but what would really impress me is a setup that gets that score with passive cooling and cards of half the form-factor length of those 6800's. How's that for an exciting vision?
I am so sick of noisy, large PC's and hot components. Maybe the multi-processor approach will solve this.

I really don't think you get it. The whole point of this is like racing. You do what you can to tweak your ride, then you press it to the limits to see who is faster.
It's funny, but this is nitrogen class racing and poor folks like us are stuck with stock cars.

What's amazing is that the record was achieved using 6800GT's, not Ultra's. The other interesting aspect is the use of a modified PSU (1320W) which may have aided in the high card clocks.

Yes, the true uniqueness here is the GT'S, we aern't talking ultras. I am also stunned that this was with xfx's which have had bad memmory batches and have been known for not the greatest 6600s and I beleive 6800's. I do think though at this level it's more about if you get a good card and have good cooling / knowledge of how the card works and which settings work best, which is the same for really any piece of hardware being overclocked.

I agree with you; I dont get it. Like my PC's, I like my cars to be quiet, smooth, economical and, within those constraints, fast.
I mean , if we attach two huge ex NASA rocket engines to the sides of a car and then light the fuse it will move fast, no doubt about it. But at the expense of control, ride, economy, noise, safety, etc, so I dont see the point?
What does it prove? Speed is related to power? Like duh!
I feel the same about PC's.
But sorry for going off-topic.

I think you made his point. While I am with you, I am a middle of the road guy. Like to overclock, but not at the expense of the aforementioned things. But I can certainly understand why people would do it. IMHO, if it wasnt for people pushing the boundaries of the status quo, we wouldn't have half of the things in life we have now.

I can respect that, althout I do not personally agree.

Exactly. I'm no stranger to a little overclockin, dont misunderstand me.
It was just the idea of using liquid nitrogen and then boasting about their 3dmark scores! What do they expect if they use liquid nitrogen?? They better have good scores!

Good point there about pushing boundaries - spose I've got to be appreciative someones doing that! As for respecting things I dont agree with; well I guess it comes down to personal philosophy and values, but I tend not to stay quiet about anything I think is wrong or absurd, if I know something about it. I know a lot of people do choose to keep their opinions to themselves, but I usually wont. I suppose I'll have a lot of respect for anyone who gets a better overclock with a cooling solution that is both quiet and is practical for everyday use, because thats where I see real value and then you'll see me singing their praises, so it works both ways.

Lots of pictures of the record run can be found here.

Unfortunately most of the text is in Finnish.
