Re: Need: Intel 775 CPU for BIOS flash

Check the section in your manual about EZ Flash. Sounds like you unzip the new bios to a floppy or USB drive. Then Alt+F2 while powering on the system. Try it and see what happens.

Yes and no.

I just hope we can POST.

I discovered that a flash drive is needed b/c the BIOS updates are around 2mb. Yes there is an EZ Flash utility...

I always update my BIOS through the floppy method...you can still do it using a floppy, you just need 2 floppies---one with Afudos on it and the other with the BIOM ROM file on it...but I don't think this will work unless your CPU is first able to post

Hi

Download and unzip the 907 BIOS for the Maximus Formula update and you will see that it weighs 2.00Mb. That is too big for a floppy.

I used the EZ Flash method within the bios. I would copy the latest bios to a flash drive. Then, insert this flash drive, power the system on, go into the bios, go into the Asus EZ Flash, select the bios file from the flash drive, install the file, and reboot the machine. Also, I did not have to make the Flash Drive bootable to make it work.

this only works after your system/CPU boots...EZ Flash won't work if the system doesn't POST

thanks for the update...so what are you going to do now?...I called ASUS up today and they said that they cannot cross ship me this board because they do not have any in stock...so the only other thing to do would be to send the board into ASUS and have them flash the BIOS for you (downside: it could take up to 10 business days total)

I was actually able to borrow a Socket 775 CPU from my co-worker so I'll be able to update my BIOS (thanks for the offer of help guiness!)...it's corny because as you stated earlier the BIOS doesn't fit on a floppy (I always used to use a floppy for BIOS updating with no issues until now) so I had to purchase a flash drive from Newegg today (was only $15 so no big deal)

Hi polonyc,

I am going to talk my professor into letting me use one of their LGA775 800MHz FSB processors for the flash Wednesday. If this fails, i go to plan C!!!

Glad you could borrow one!!! I would have been caught by that large BIOS file also, always did BIOS updates by floppy too. Guess USB flash drives are Std tool box item now. Never thought about it for this Gigabyte X38 board yet, lucked out in that it posted. Anyway.... Good luck on build it will be a good one!!!

Question Re: Need: Intel 775 CPU for BIOS flash

Hi

Do we have to convert the BIOS update's name to 8.3 format before flashing?

Thanks

You shouldn't have to change the name. The Asus EZ Flash utility will still recognize the file and install the bios update once you select it.
