Building Your First Computer

Reviewer: Geoff "Zeppelin" Babcock

Excerpt: "So you are thinking about doing your first computer build, well you have come to the right place. Please take the time to read through this entire document. Our aim is to help you make this first build a success."

"Quite a bit of time and effort goes into the design, planning and execution of a computer. At the very first we need to point out that there are pluses and minuses to building your own computer. Let's explore the negatives: DIY, do it yourself, means that there is no toll free number to call for support if things go wrong. There is no guarantee, no warranty, and no technician to come out and fix your problem. Further, if you make errors you can be out several hundred dollars by having to buy replacement parts for your goofs."

Feel free to post your comments and questions here!

...and this is another reason I love ABX Zone.

Superlative work Zepp! How come this stuff always comes out after the ordeal.

Was there any mention as to saving the packaging/boxes the componants came in? If there was I missed it - if not, in my experience it certainly makes life easier further on down the road.

Thanks for the time and effort you put in the edit Paragon, a valuble piece of work!

Great guide, Zep. It could very well save many people from some of the ill fortune many of us suffered back in the days of our first build.

Thank you for all of your nice comments my fellow ABXers. It is my hope that this article will inspire some would-be builders to do a little more research before they open up their wallets. It is further my hope that possibly some ill-conceived builds will never start.

JT, if it was a snake, it woulda bit me! Some of the boxes in the pictures are empty and set aside for possible future use. Gave me a good laugh at myself on that one, thanks.

I really appreciate the fact that you folks have recognized the importance of the editor. There is lots of work required to produce an article of this nature and the contributions of the editor are quite often overlooked. Thanks for all your help and assistance Miles.

Cheers,

Zeppelin
