Overview: Bofinn gives us an excellent guide for setting up a Dell Inspiron 9300 Laptop...This guide with some slight variations can be applied to almost any laptop computer. Due to circumstances beyond his control (a son in Iraq that needed this computer urgently) Bofinn didn't have the time to taken any pictures. The guide is so straight forward that anyone should be able to follow his simple instructions...A very good read! Thanks Bofinn

Dell pack them with so much preinstalled junk it's ridiculous.

I recently set up a new Inspirion 1300 for my sister, I wiped the HD and then installed XP SP2, Office 2003 etc. and only extra thing I put on there were the Dell QuickStart that give OSD when you change volume etc.

On an Inspiron 1300, without doing a complete re-install of the operating system, I was able to get the system down to running only 16 processes. There was no anti-virus running, but AVG could be added if you wanted. Combine that with a decent firewall and you are good to go for the most part. Maybe some spyware protection if you play in the neck of woods that might need it.

I was able to achieve this in about 20 min with the machine. This included uninstalling the applications and reboots.

I really appreciated this information as I just ordered a new Dell Notebook.
I'm curious as to why you seem not to like Trend Micro's Anti-Virus program?
I have to admit that I've used the free Anti Vir for a long time with no problems at all. And I have heard a lot of good things about Trend Micro.

I went with AVG anti-virus just so my son would be using the same thing I am. Makes it easier to tell him how to update it. Just my preference!

there is a program called pc-decrapifier that removes the bloatware (lets you choose what)
freewaregenius.com/2006/12/24/pc-decrapifier/
takes away some of the bother works very well really easy

I like to do a clean install on em, then I make a new"Dell" restore image without the dell crap on it...
