Bump. Come on folks, some of you must have some input for Lucas! Let's give him a hand here. He's made an excellent start on this and your input will be very helpful.

This guide is comming out pretty well.

Another section that needs to be added is hardware compatability. In general you should mention that the older the hardware the better chance of linux support. Also mention in general intel chipsets and nvidia cards have better support.

cheers mate, installing drivers except for video isn't usually needed in most linux distro's will autodetect your hardware these days. Only distro's such as archlinux, crux and a few highly optimised distro's will have you having to manually edit your drivers modules text file.

However I will put in sections for installing nvidia and ATi video card drivers for linux. I may do something about having linux sound (Alsa), but the hardest is usually chipset or video.

The guide is intended to show to get it on the computer rather than configuring linux itself.

Bump to bring this to the top. I've added all the comments and fixed the link to version 2 so it can now be read and commented on.

LM, this is in your draft:

/boot partition should be always formatted as ext2 or ext3

I suggest you to change this to ext2 only. The reason for this is that /boot is static, hence it doesn't require a journalling FS such as ext3 (or ReiserFS).

Journalling FS are recommended for files in directories and partitions which change a lot. /boot doesn't change at all.

Sorry Ive been a few days away from my computer Ive been in hospital but on the mend now.

Ive had a read of your document Lucas and I think it will be a big help to PPL like me and you've done a great job. The only way I can test it out is to print it out and try it which I cant yet as my spare PC with the 10g drive is being used by my daughter. I might get it back in february, I dont want to play with my good PC yet til I know what I'm doing. So til I get back my spare PC I'll be watching with interest

I got quite interested when you said linux can read and write to FAT, I might put a 6g drive on my spare PC with Win 98 and the 10g for Ubuntu. its a pity it cant write to NTFS though I suppose if PPL want to do that with WinXP thats a reason to format XP as FAT32
