yeah well I captive destroyed my partition table once and lost me 40 gb of anime. I wasn't pleased. As far as I am concerned Linux can only read NTFS.

Hi Lucas.

I agree with the others ... this is a great idea for a thread. I've read your draft and it's helpful. I've tried a couple of versions of Mandrake so far (about to try 10.1) and getting it to install is usually the easy part for me. It gets really difficult once you realise your Graphics card won't do 3D and you need to install a driver. The same goes for installing drivers for Sound cards and DSL modems ... things you are really going to need (I'm now using a Netgear Router, so I'll see if that works easier soon). So any help in actually getting all of your basic hardware working once it's installed would be great. For me the final thing would be a simple how to for installing other software e.g. games like Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. I was going to set up a server on an old PC for this for my friends and I to play on using my broadband connection but I couldn't figure out how to install it. So the old PC is still sitting in my cupboard.

In fact a whole other guide might be "How to set up a Linux Media server for your home using an old PC". Just a thought, maybe a step too far for now. Needless to say I think some Linux guides written for people who want to switch from Windows is a great idea, they could also show more practical uses for Linux too.

For a lot of people Linux is a great idea but it feels kind of impenetrable ... but then maybe I'm just not as technically minded as I think I am

Keep up the good work.

Sorry about posting the same message twice. For some reason my original post wouldn't show on my laptop, so I wrote another from scratch - that I've now deleted.

Version 3 has been released, I haven't changed a lot added some explanation on hardware.

Things to do, explanation of package management and advisement on how it should be used. Installing on RAID and SCSI (I haven't installed on any sort of raid even in Windows).

I fixed the problem. You should be able to grab the attachment now. Anytime you have a similar problem, "report" the post, just like you would report a bad posting, and one of the mods will fix the problem for you. Make sure that you just include the fact that you cannot grab the attachment, so we know what the problem is. Feel free to use the reporting function for problems like this with a good posting as well as to report flames, etc.

By using the reporting function you will get it to our attention faster than simply waiting for a mod to happen to notice it, like I just did. Sorry for the problem guys. But, it should be good to go now.
