Great Work. Thanks for the effort. Just one request-why don't you post the most recent version of your guide upfront in the first post itself? Otherwise if one reads the thread chronologically there is no way of knowing the recent version unless one reaches the end of the thread.

Haven't been here much lately I've been doing battle with ubuntu and several reinstalls when I install with out updates I have a GUI (not sure about sound though, it might not have been turned up enough) but if I install and let it do the updates with the install I lose the GUI and I'm stuck at the command prompt Ive been getting help at the ubuntu forum http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ had a couple of Fatal:Errors that Ive fixed with help, though reading through the posts I could probably have left them but still no GUI I've tried startx no good. The following suggestion I might do after playing with it a bit (nothing to lose I might learn something) : Quote: The quick and dirty way to try this is to reinstall without updates. Then start synaptic. You can either start it in a terminal by typing $ sudo synaptic or click on it from the menu. When you have done that press refresh which will scan to see what updates are needed. Then mark the updates and press apply. At this point it will tell you what it is going to do. If it is deleting a whole shed load of stuff including X and gnome don't proceed but copy and paste it to your next posting and we will see what you can do. Make sure you've configured it so you can go online in Ubuntu first though End Quote Your guide gave me the confidence to give it a go Lucas

Right my guide might as well go final and be converted to PDF. There not mush more to add to it, really. Also Sandman All you have to do to get X back is to recogfigure X, i.e. xf86cfg -textmode in console and set up X, it a piece of ****.
