AFAIK, I have the latest version. I couldn't find any version info on their site, but I do think that v5 was just recently released. As I said, I just got it within the last few days - maybe on Saturday?

Well, I guess they posted it on their site a little earlier, because I definately have v5.0.108! I thought it was new, but it must have been just released when I got it on Saturday.

I installed it and have been playing with it for a while and so far I think this is a great program. In all my searches for something like this and trying things that didn't work, I don't know how I managed to miss this little proggie that has apparently been around for several years. The problem I described in my earlier post happens very rarely, but has on occassion caused me to lose hours of work.

Thanks for the info, PCB. I do have one question for you: Are the dogs going to expect me to buy 'em dinner and take 'em to a movie?

A quick update, and a bump. I have now been using this program for about two weeks, and I am very satisfied with it. It does exactly what it claims to do, is highly configurable, and has saved my skin at least once already when I let my fingers do the walking before my brain got in gear.

Recovery is really easy, just explore the Recovery Bin - it keeps complete folder trees for every file you delete, exploring for the deleted file is just a matter of opening the correct drive and folders, find the file, and click on restore - done. No need to figure out where to restore the deleted file, it is done automatically by the software.

And, I love the version saving feature. I've already used that as well to go back to earlier versions with some document files I edited, and really didn't like the changes I had made. You can even open version files directly within the Recovery Bin - no need to restore them until you find exactly the version you want.

I really highly recommend this software. It was worth every penny of the $30 it cost just in the time and trouble it has already saved me.

I have been using this for a few weeks now and it has already proven worth it. There has been a problem in the last couple of days. UDServe has been running and using 40-50% of CPU for some time. At first I thought it was in my settings which I had as purge after seven days and secure delete. When I got it to stop yesterday, I changed the settings, increasing the bin size and unselecting the automatic purge. If I am reading the information correctly, when the bin gets full, it will delete down to 80% of capacity. Even assuming that is what is happening, we are talking about a max of 600 MB to be deleted and even with secure delete, it should not take an hour and a half to do that, it seems.

I haven't had an opportunity to do as much with the exclusion list, which should help if a full bin is causing this. As soon as I can, I will do that.

Also make sure that you are not using the secure delete feature (unless you need it for security reasons) because that does DOD standard erasing, and that takes a fair amount of CPU usage. As well as a lot of disk access as the software overwrites the "erased" file multiple times with an formula generated series of "random" garbage.

Just for information for others who might have the same problem. It seems to be solved now. I had also tried turning off secure delete. Even on rebooting, UDServe would come back on. I think maybe changes don't take on operations in progress so it still wanted to secure delete the files. One thing that leads me to this conclusion is that while this was happening the InProgress folder had several files, but it is now empty. It was about a week ago that I was doing a lot of photo editing, so there may have been a lot of good sized files that had reached the 7 day limit.

I will leave secure delete off. I have another program that I use to secure wipe with DOD standards free space and files. It works a lot faster than SecureDelete apparently does, but then for 30 bucks, I suppose we can't ask for everything. I am still convinced this is a great little tool.
