Exclamation That blows!!!!!

I guess I don't want an MSI 6600GT then, that's so stupid not to include it! I wonder where it's deisbled, bios or hardware? I wonder if aybody will try flashing their card's bios to a different brand to try to make the temp monitor work. Evga doesn't have temp monitoring either, that's so lame! So that leaves BFG, Gigabyte, and Leadtek for my choices for my buddy's puter. That screws up an otherwise perfect card.

Thumbs up Bios hack to enable temp monitoring!

Cogar, you can mod your card's bios to enable the temp monitoring if you like, or download a bios that's allready modded. I knew them bungholes disabled it in the stinkin bios, why would they do that? Anyway, there's multiple threads on it @ MVKTech if you're interested. I can help you if you like, sounds really simple to do. I got lucky with my card, XFX disabled it too when they went to the shoddy heatsink, so you can't tell how bad it SUX. You can also enable fan monitoring and controls if you like, but that can be tricky. This stuff is possible with any brand card you can flash the bios on.

Thank you for the information, Deer Slayer. There is no good reason for MSI or eVGA to disable a native function like temperature monitoring. I will check it out. Let me add that although I would like temperature monitoring, it is not a deal breaker for me. Performance and stability is where it is at. (I understand monitoring the temperature is a way to judge potential performance and stability issues.)

That also got me to thinking that if this functionality is available, it may be only a matter of time before Unwinder adds it to Riva Tuner. (That is my hope anyway. Riva Tuner is a great product IMO.)

That is fine with me. I am honored that you consider it good enough to move into that forum.

You are welcome Cogar. Not every review or guide has to be exhaustive or 50 pages long. Just complete and useful for the members. All our members are encouraged to think about "shorty" how-to's like this.

BTW, I left a redirect link in Graphics, so anyone looking for this there will find a link to this thread.

Smile You're going to have to do some reading.

There's several ways to do it, you'll have to decide which way to do it. The way I'd do it is to dump my original bios, edit it, and flash it back on there. Here's a good place to start @ mvktech , they have whole threads on it. It took an hour of reading to find what's needed, so here ya go.

Has anyone done it themselves?

I have not yet read all of the threads at MVKTech, but a poster named "DaKiLLa" posted a modded BIOS to enable temp monitor on MSI Geforce 6600GT agp here on page 7 of this thread:
http://www.mvktech.net/component/opt...limitstart,60/

The first poster, artbio, also described a way to hack the BIOS for an XFX directly, for those who are so inclined.
http://www.mvktech.net/component/opt...7587/catid,13/

I will leave it up to the reader to decide if any of these mods are worth the risk. I personally will study the various procedures more before deciding or recommending any action.

I own 2 MSI 6600 GT, it does show the card temperature. It is under the menu temperature setting.

Interesting. I believe 66.93 is the standard NVIDIA WHQL Certified driver. The one that came with my card, 71.22, may be a custom MSI driver.

Ok, I changed to the 66.93 certified drivers. For me, they removed the "white grass" problem in Aztec. The water seems normal to me as well. It also enabled refresh rates with my monitor past 85Hz (the highest allowable for the 71.22 drivers). The driver change did not have any effect on the Source video stress test (the only test I ran after the driver change). Overall, I would say it seems to have been a good improvement. Unfortunately, the temperature monitoring remained "missing in action."

Note: I also added a "how to change drivers" section to my first post.
