Why Can't Internet Users Speak Like Normal People?

Gerald invokes a satirical semi-rant about the overuse of shortcuts in forums and chatrooms and on the internet in general.

"On a side note, I would ideally like to see the rendering part of a browser as a pipeline. You can then add stages to the pipeline at a position of your liking. Pretty much making the rendering of pages into a set of filters applied to the raw bytestream (a bit like *nix and files/pipes works, I suppose). That way you could e.g. add an ad blocking system even before the real HTML parser kicks in. Or add a translation mechanism before the rendering happens. It would make the whole rendering engine very customizable, too."

wonder how Kongo feels

Looks like a great way to **** some folks off. One thing I have learned in my life is you do not poke fun at others fun. No matter how good natured you are about you presentation of the content. People are quick to take offense at being poked at and long at returning to the fold after the event. With close friends you can pull this off but presented to the public you will come off looking bad. IMHO.....

The title of the article is in the process of being changed to "Why Can't Internet Users Speak Like Normal People?" The thread title has already been changed. It has come to my attention that the previous title might carry unintended connotations. My apologies to anyone who misunderstood my intent, particularly our non-English speaking members and guests.

Just a couple of comments...

Personally I use IIRC and AFAIK interchangably to express (politely) the following subtext:

"I know this is so from my own experience and/or research, but I can't be bothered to provide documentary support for my post. Learn to use one or more Search Engines: the information you seek is widely available on the WWW, & I'm not here to do your research for you."

Admittedly this is an "old-school" online attitude, reflecting the fact that many geeks, nerds, etc. often have a glaring & general lack of social skills, coupled with a large fund of arcane technical knowledge.

(OT, if you resemble the above description, don't come complaining to me. I didn't make you the way you are, and it's about time you took responsibility for yourself.)

Also, I personally believe that the "specialized communication elements" employed by Internet users are essentially no different that the unique terms & phrases used by any other group of specialists or enthusiasts. Go hang out with auto/motorcycle racers, engineers, medical professionals, skiers, surfers, sailors or pilots (to name a very few disciplines) and I guarantee (from my personal experience in all of the above-mentioned categories) that you'll run into just as much inpenetrable jargon as you read here @ [ABX]...

just my $0.02...

(fades into the background, rotflmao... )

P.S. YBNormal? Nobody else is!
P.P.S. Oh yeah, don't forget to RTFM!

Nice thread!. I agree with mush of what you said, and it was fun to poke a little bit of humor at it.

IIRC is exactly what you said: Generally it means I think what I am telling you is correct, although I am too tired or not inclined get the facts for you. At least you can push people on the right direction, enabling them to look and learn for themselves.

Oh my!

I think that's what the "Computer Literacy" course I've seen is about!

Nice article, and yeah, jargon exists everywhere... there's no way to stop it, only learn it!

my problem is that i type too fast for my skill level, then words are messed up. as far as the IIRC and AFAIK, i agree. if someone is giving free advice, then its not at all their job to give reference, however if they constantly use that it gets old, and they loose any reputation
