Try posting a screenshot of all the available devices under the System Devices. That should make it easier to say something about whether or not it's the proper one you've found .

Smile looping to infinity and beyond

Here we go folks, I've been having this problem for almost a year now with my computer, and tried almost everything my mind could possible think of doing. I've tried every solution on this board, and every other board I could find relating to this file and to the infinite loop, with absolutely no success. I tried every driver package available, bios updates, agp chipset updates, every combination of every setting. I've tried reducing power usage in my computer, I've placed more power in my computer... I've added more fans and created an optimal cooling system in my computer. I made sure there were absolutely no IRQ conflicts, and nothing was using the same IRQ as my video card. I've tried with one stick of ram, with one in 1 and 3. I've tried disabling onboard sound, and putting in a soundblaster card. Nothing... I mean nothing, worked at all.

Until now! I found a solution, that has worked for me and a bunch of other people who have tested it for me.
So give it a try, perhaps it will work for you too. My computer has been working 100% since I made this change. There is a chance it could reduce the effeciency of your texture drawing with your video card... but I've tested it with :

Unreal Tournament 2004
Rise Of Nations
Neverwinter Nights
Doom 3
Max Payne 2
Transport Giant
and a bunch of older games....

Anyhow, no more wait, give this a shot :

Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)

Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.

Please let me know how this works for you.
Good luck.
Well, I've tried the above fix on my Biostar SFF Pentium w/ AIW 9800 128 Pro. The loop started about 2 weeks ago with the mouse and remote freeze and then, after turning off the automatic reboot, I saw the explanation on a BSOD. After the "fix" my machine ran fine. But the real test comes today when I get home because the loop has occurred from a cold boot after the SFF has been idol for a couple of hours. Then it would stabilize after several boots. I'll let you know tomarrow if it works. Here's a salute to you in advance of that happily anticipated occassion.

about 5-6 weeks ago I did something to screw up windows. Cannot even remember what. After having searched several forums and Googled several search terms (all wrong) and trying just about everything I could find. Nothing workewd. Everytime I tried reinstalling, after it had gone through the whole process, the system would shut down with a "Windows shutdown with a 'protect your system' with a 'ati2dvag' error". After one more install and same error, I Googled one more time with what was the right search term and found this site.
While I don't remember the order I did things, I applied the fix in safe mode and rebooted, PRESTO !, I've got it all back, in seemingly perfect order (knock on wood). I might still be looking if not for this site and thread. I am now reloading and updating all the other stuff with everything everybody should have to keep things right. I just want to say thanks. (now all I have to do is reactivate windows).
P.S. I've been messing with this for about 6 weeks, what a relief.

THANKS ! (especially to cobrakaun)

Exclamation "ati2dvag.dll infinite loop"

Thanks to "RedZot" .....I'm starting a new thread in an effort to make this an Important Alert.....After over a year, and trying all the things that are listed on this page and numerous others, nothing worked,I finally found this site, and the suggestion made,on the page mentioned here actually worked. It's nearly unbeliveable,in it's simplicity. I'm relating to the error mesg... "The driver for the display device got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your display device vendor for any driver updates "If you've had or,are having this problem, check this page,on this site for your cure.My case as many others also started with a new video card install.I would highly
recommend going to this page and make yourself a copy of the simple to apply suggestion, for possible future use.Belive me after all this time,I've only seen this
suggestion to my problem, this one time.Hey,It works.Incase you may wonder,I'm running XP Home SP2...Hurray for the day..!and long live "RedZot".
Do A Search for (t-28206) and it'll take you to the page....find the suggestion by "RedZot"

Red face It worked on a Dell Inspiron 9100 too

My 9100 would blue-screen during boot-up, just before the login screen.
The only reliable fix previously was to repair XP Pro using the CD, whick took us back to Service Pack 1A... and that only lasted a few weeks!!
Hope the performance hit isn't too bad... and that it stay fixed!
By the way, Dell installed a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 video module in my Inspiron 9100, I'm not sure about the AGP interface!!

Thanks a million
Ian Campbell-Kelly

ati2avag problem

I am using a previous solution but as a complete beginner I don't seem to get far. Can anyone help?

I am trying the following:-

Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)

Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.

I choose Intel (R) 82875p Processor to AGP Controller- 2579
BUT when I go to update I get "unable to find any drivers for this device"

What do I do now? Sorry if this is very basic.......Mike

i havent read this thread, but try to get into safe mode if you can, and uninstall ATI drivers, otherwise you could try to do a repair install of windows!

mkm, it sounds a little bit like your trying to search for the driver. According to the checklist you should manually choose which driver to install.

[I suspect it goes wrong here...]
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.

Finish(button)
Reboot.

Hello StarTraveller
What happens is I do not have any list appear. It is completely empty!

I tracked the first few steps to show you what to select. Hopefully, your problem is simply a wrong choice.

Unfortunately, I can only show you screenshots in Danish, but I suspect that the options are placed identically.

Device Manager
See the first attachment. Locate the appropriate device. Right click on it and choose "Update Driver".

Update Guide step 1
Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)"

Update Guide step 2
Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install."

Update Guide step 3
Select "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge"

I hope the screenshots help you make the right choices.

If you still get an empty list then please post a screenshot of the available devices under System Devices (my guess on the English term) in the Device Manager. Maybe you're trying to update the driver for the wrong device...

StarTraveller

I can't even do screenshot!
So the choice in System Devices of Device Manager is:-

Intel(R) 82801EB LPC Interface controller-24D0
Intel(R) 82801EB PCI Bridge-244E
Intel(R) 82801EB SMBus Controller-24D3
Intel(R) 82875P Memory Controller Hub-2578
Intel(R) 82875P Processor to AGP Controller-2579

So I choose the last one and follow your process through to (your last screen shot) nothing is listed and I am asked to choose a disc, or browse. But their is no thing listed

Hmm, that sounds a bit weird...

Do you get anything on the list if you deselect the "Show only compatible hardware" above the list?

It's just a longshot. If it doesn't help you then I'm pretty much out of ideas because I'm unable to replicate your problem.

Perhaps for some reason the drivers aren't in the Windows driver repository on your machine. In that case you may have to get them from the Windows CD.

I just want to thank Thkernlk for the fix posted here. I also tried everything with my Acer Travelmate 800 series with a Radeon 9000 Mobility display adapter. This fix was easy and worked a treat and has cured the frustrating problem of the machine refusing to boot unless in VGA mode.

Thanks again
