Unhappy A7M266: ati2dvag.dll infinite loop. Hopeless?

I have been suffering from the dreaded "ati2dvag.dll infinite loop" (see log below) for more than a year now. It does not affect my everyday computer tasks, but does appear when I attempt to run newer 3D games, namely, NHL 2002, GTA 3, and Undying, but not older titles like System Shock 2. I don't generally play a lot of games, so these are the only 3D titles I have tried in the last year. My computer will hang a few seconds after the game intro or game play begins and I must reboot; or, if I wait long enough, it will reboot automatically. I can browse and make changes to the config/setup screens with no problem. It is the same with the three games I mentioned and with every driver version released in the past year. What has got me frustrated is that I have been searching for a solution from various tech supports, bulletin boards, and newsgroups, and tried many suggestions but without a solution. Then I found a few suggestions to upgrade the power supply. And this seemed hopeful, because I was only running on 300W. So I bought an Enermax 431W ps. And, again, no solution. So I was hoping that someone here might have something to help me. Maybe someone has experienced my problem and has found a fix for it.

What more I can tell you is that Undying has a safe mode for troubleshooting, and if I disable "3D video hardware", the game will not hang. I keep all my software and drivers updated.

My computer specs:
WinXP Pro sp1
ASUS A7M266 mobo
AMD Athlon 1.3 GHz
(1) Crucial PCI2100 256 mb stick
Enermax 431W power supply. (+3.3V & 5V: 220W max)
ATI Radeon 8500 AGP
slot 1 - empty
slot 2 - Promise Ultra 100 IDE controller
slot 3 - Creative Labs Audigy sound card
slot 4 - empty
slot 5 - Actiontec PCI Pro modem
(3) Hard drives
(2) CD/DVD roms

Welcome to the forums. :wave2:

Sounds like a resource conflict of some kind, obviously related to the video card.

For starters don't put anything in PCI slot 1 or 2. Both of these share with the AGP slot. Next, make sure the onboard audio is properly disabled, see page 21 of the manual.

Try moving the modem to slot 4 and the Promise card to slot 5. In most cases, the last slot is not shared when it comes to IRQs. I have both my Susboards setup that way. Move the modem first, then after all the drivers have been reinstalled move the Promise.

No thats not the solution, the file ati2dvag.dll is the problem.
I've played about an hour now and have no problems yet.

Maybe you've been to this site? Some people have found a way out of the problem, some not, it does seem that a conflicting device is likely.

Exclamation Fix!

A FIX THAT WORKED FOR ME AND A BUNCH OF OTHER PEOPLE!! READ ON!

Here we go folks, I've been having this problem for almost a year now with my computer, and tried almost everything my mind could possible think of doing. I've tried every solution on this board, and every other board I could find relating to this file and to the infinite loop, with absolutely no success. I tried every driver package available, bios updates, agp chipset updates, every combination of every setting. I've tried reducing power usage in my computer, I've placed more power in my computer... I've added more fans and created an optimal cooling system in my computer. I made sure there were absolutely no IRQ conflicts, and nothing was using the same IRQ as my video card. I've tried with one stick of ram, with one in 1 and 3. I've tried disabling onboard sound, and putting in a soundblaster card. Nothing... I mean nothing, worked at all.

Until now! I found a solution, that has worked for me and a bunch of other people who have tested it for me.
So give it a try, perhaps it will work for you too. My computer has been working 100% since I made this change. There is a chance it could reduce the effeciency of your texture drawing with your video card... but I've tested it with :

Unreal Tournament 2004
Rise Of Nations
Neverwinter Nights
Doom 3
Max Payne 2
Transport Giant
and a bunch of older games....

Anyhow, no more wait, give this a shot :

Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)

Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.

Please let me know how this works for you.
Good luck.

Talking It worked

Just to provide you with some feedback. I've had the same problems described here. I've applied the PCI-PCI trick, and my troubles are gone.

Thanks for sharing it!

worked for me too

cobrakaun's fix appears to have solved this problem with my IBM Notebook. Thanks so much for the help, I wasn't even able to load onto the desktop in anything but "safe mode" because of this infinite loop fiasco. Thanks again

Just wanted to say a M-A-S-S-I-V-E thank you to cobrakaun for his fix.

I was having a similar problem to what everyone else was describing, for the past 5 months, and it was driving me insane!!!

Sometimes my pc would run fine for several hours, other times it would require several reboots in the space of an hour before it would stabilize and even then I was never sure if it was going to shutdown on me without warning.

I had searched for a number of solutions on the net, all of which proved to be fruitless. I was even considering formatting my pc and reinstalling everything. Thank goodness I didn't. After one last ditched attempt to find an answer to this problem, I chanced upon this site and cobrakaun's suggestion. I tried it and it worked a treat. My pc is now running like a dream.

The reason I signed up for this forum, is to let other users know that if you're having a similar problem (as described above) then cobrakaun's solution may well be the one for you.

Cheers guys!

ati2dvag endless loop fixed

Yes, THANKS for that fix Cobrakaun. I was going crazy with this error happening about every 2 hours on my Dell Inspiron 9100 (XP Pro). It's been great so far!! No problems.

Cheers!

My ATI started doing this just this afternoon, and I had been searching for the cause. Thank goodness for this thread, and the solution!

I noticed that when I installed the generic driver, it replaced the agp440.sys -- I've seen other PCs freeze up when it comes to that file if you're booting in Safe Mode or using the /SOS switch in boot.ini -- I wonder if this would be a fix for that condition as well ... hrm.
