I had a similar problem as this,,my power supply would turn on for about 1-3 seconds and then shut off,,absolutely nothing..checked everything and was coming up with the same situation you are in. Went out bought a brand new Antec 430W PSU and everything is working great now. Come to find out the 300W that came with the case was not enough to run everything I had with my XP3000+. A plus with the 430W is I have enough legroom to play around with overclocking.

I was also told that 300W should be enough but trust me it's not,,,I burnt up 2 PSU with this processor trying to run it off of a 300W PSU.

System wont boot without a video card... try the following steps

step1: on the back of the case, ensure that the power supply is set for the correct voltage.... It's usually some type of red slide switch... If you do get some sort of post as you mentioned.. then this is probably already in the correct position...

step2: make sure, and then make sure again.. that your video card is seated properly... System will not boot without it .. There is an LED light near the AGP slot.. it should show green otherwise card is not correct type or not seated correctly

step3... is the CPU and CPU Fan installed correctly ? Sometimes folks have mounted them backwards or the heatsink is not seated properly .. causing a gap.. in which case the board would shut down .. due to overheating... Also did you apply a layer of thermal paste on the processer when you mounted it? (make sure its not too thick a layer).. or did you use the thermal tape .. which is ok...

step4: Did you mount the memory in the correct slot.? This board is picky about the type of memory it uses.. as well as which slot it gets mounted in...

Step4>.. if still no go.. clear the cmos... by shutting down the power via the power supply toggle switch.. then pop the battery and move the jumper next to the battery from positions 1& 2 over to 2& 3 for about 10 seconds.. then back to original position.. and pop battery back in.. and retry...

Step 5: There is an FSB jumper on this board as well... makes sure it is in the default position (pins 1 &2) for your processor to work correctly

If all else fails.. do what the others have been trying to tell you.. and remove the board from the case to ensure it is not shorting out .. and try to power it up with just a video card, processor and memory...

Good Luck

Okay another update to the problem. It is getting aggravating.

As previously mentionned I replaced the CPU 2800+ by a 3000+ Barton.
Also, thinking that the RAM was defective, I bough a generic stick of 256 MB Kingston RAM PC 3200.
And at last, as recomended by this thread, I bought a new Case with a 400W PSU (replacing the PSU of the old case would have been more expensive).

So basically, I have replaced every component of the computer except the motherboard itself.

To avoid any external interruption from the case, I removed the board from the case, put on the CPU and FAN, and the Kingston RAM stick (in slot closest to the CPU) and with/without the Video Card.

The FSB is set on 1-2 .
The CMOS has been cleared.
The AGP Led is not up and red (meaning the card is well seated)
The Mobo boots up for 2-3 seconds

"System Failed Memory Test" is the message I get before it shuts down.

The problem is the same no matter what.

Now I am wondering if the motherboard itself is not broken. I tried to call Asus Tech support but I am still waiting for their call.

Any solution? Or can anyone direct me to a better motherboard for my Barton and less troublesome?

this is how one individual on another website forum fixed his computer,,he pretty much had the same setup.

*UPDATE*

My hardware was "Good" afterall.
My problem was that I didn't have the heatsink properly oriented on the CPU thus causing the overload to kill power to keep from destroying the CPU. Because of the layout of my case I had to disassemble the fan and heatsink and rotate the clip so that the clamp side was opposite my power supply.
maybe something too look at....i read thru the whole posts here : http://www.hardwareaccelerated.com/f...985ab697fe8771
and he was having the same problem..after memory failed computer would shut down not allowing access too BIOS. hope this works for ya..

It is possible to orient the HS the wrong way on a socket A. I've done it myself...

Certainly is possible. However because of the shape it can be detected if you take a good look. It will be sort of tilted. But yes It has happened.

check out page 8 of this install guide. Make sure the stepped portion matches up correctly with your heat sink vs cpu.

page 14 shows it incorrect:

OMG!!

I followed the link provided by Bofinn (the other one isn't working) so I read the manual and tried to install the Heatsink according to the manual.

Now the mobo boots up normally and I can hear the Vocal Error Message telling me that no IDE drives are attached or Keyboard! Mind you this is testing without anything plugged in except CPU, RAM and Grahpic card.Which are the usual errors...

IT WORKS!!!!

Now I realized that I installed the Heatsink wrong, just opposite of what the manual suggested...

Afer a year of struggling, replacing almost every component, tears, sweat and blood, frustration, it seems it is finally working.

I think I am the perfect illustration of Human Stupidity. How far can it get?

I would like to thank everyone that posted in this thread, for you helped me during this period of frustration and pain.

Thank you all very much!

New Set of problem sadly...

Interesting.... The PC now boosts to the BIOS and beyond without problem. It recognizes the RAM and CPU fine, and the HD as well I think. Going to the Bios, I make sure to make the PC boot from the CD ROM drive first as I do not have a floppy disk drive. Plus who uses that these days anyway??

As the instalayion begins with a blue screen, identifying my hardware and loading some components, the installation states Windows is starting....

Then the PC shuts down on me!

What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Seems I found the origin of the problem. While checking in the BIOS for any troubesome setting, I noticed that the CPU temperature was closing toward 200 degrees Farenheit....

And that's not very good. Also while staying on the BIOS the same amount of time I spent for the Windows Installation, it still shut down on me.

What Heatsink fan would you recommend to me (not too expensive)? How do you apply thermal paste without damaging the cpu?

Can you set the bios to default?

The heatsinks are many. Here is one
http://www.a1-electronics.net/Heatsi...25CA_Apr.shtml

Use Aarctic silver 5.
