The way I put AS5 on my processor is to take some plastic wrap (serane wrap) and wrap it around my fingertip so no greases or any contaminants are mixed in with the AS5. I then take and drop not even a BB sized drop onto the tip of that finger. Then, I grab a hold of the case with my other hand to ground myself, and apply a thin even coat across the top of the processor while making sure none of the AS5 runs over the edge. Then attach the heatsink the proper way and you should be good to go. Just make sure the heatsink does not sit on any capacitors that could keep it raised even the tinyiest little bit.

The Heatsink/Fan mentionned here seems to be made for Athlon 64 and I couldn't find on newegg.

Any other recommendations?

I use both of these on overclocked AthlonXP's. Very good results from both.

Another update!

I have received my new heatsink/fan with the A5 Articl thermal paste. Installed everything as according to the manual and the CPU is running (according to BIOS) at 18-20 degrees Celsius.

Only problem I see is that the CPU is running at 1.75 GHZ when I look at the system properties. If I attempt to change the Frequency at 200mhz in the BIOS, then it will not boot further than the BIOS.

Any way to change it? I wish to get the full capacity of my CPU for the price I payed

How do you have the memory timings setup or is it set to SPD? What memory are you using? I believe you referenced a couple of different kinds in this thread.
Another couple of things: What Rev. board do you have? Rev. 1.06 or 2.0? It's stamped between the PCI slots. Also what version bios are you using?

I have no clue about the memory timings setup

The memory I am using atm is 1 stick of 256mb Corsair XMS and another 256bm stick of generic Kingston, all of them PC 3200 DDR 400.

Rev. board last time I checked was 2.0 and the bios version is 1.7 if I recall.

Do I need to set any jumper on the mobo?

I don't have the manual for the Rev version 2.0 (Mine is Rev 1.06) but there maybe a jumper on the board to switch between lower FSB to higher FSB. On the Rev 1.06 board there is a jumper that moves between FSB 200 and FSB 266/333. So check for that, but the default is most likely set on the higher FSB on your board.
You may have issues with that mixed memory. I suggest you run Memtest to check the stability of the ram. Google search for it, download and run the program for a couple of hours.
You may also need a bios upgrade. I expect you do if the bios is the original.
The memory timings are set in the bios under Advanced Chipset Features. Optimal is default and you can't change the timings when it's set like that, but it should work OK at that setting.
Take a look at Memory Frequency and see how that is set. By SPD or a %. It should be 100%.

A afraid you will have problems with the mixed mem as Garnet said. This is an issue with this particular board.

the key is not to get too cute or creative with the bios settings until you understand them better...
1) FSB jumper should be set to pins 1&2.. (top 2 from top to bottom)
2) BIOS 1004 or higher should get you going (be careful there is a difference between rev 1.x and 2.0 bios)
3) Bios Setting to start...==> go into Advanced Chipset
most of the defaults should be ok.. but the FSB usually has to be altered to match your processor....
a) CPU External Clock Freq => set to half of the FSB rating of your CPU processor.. So if your xp2800 runs with an FSB of 333, then set this to 166
b) keep most everything else at the defaults to get started.. including memory freq, multipliers, voltages, etc.... Most of these defaults map out to be AUTO or OPTIMAL for the most part...
c) doublecheck the AGP as well .. as there is a setting in there somewhere asking what type of v.card you are using (AGP, PCI, etc.) and whether or not it support 8x agp....

as others have stated.. this board is very finicky with the memory.... especially if you mix and match.. So I would simply start with the 1 stick of the Corsair .. and once you stabilize you can then add the other to see if it will cause you problems...

good luck

OK,,here's what you do when your in the BIOS. Go to the settings for the FSB and the timings for memory page. Once you get there, change the system performance to read user defined. Change the memory frequency to read 100%. After you do this you can change ur FSB in 1 step increments. Change the CPU External Frequency to read 166, and then the Resulting Frequency under the memory frequency should read the same as the CPU External Frequency of 166. I don't believe the XP2800 is a 400mhz chip (I could be wrong here) so it will not run with a CPU External Frequency of 200, no way possibly (unless you have water cooling or something better then that)

He's using a 3000+ Barton which is a 400 mhz chip. His FSB is running 166, as he stated the processor is running 1.75.

almost forgot.....he didn't state whether it was a 333fsb or 400fsb processor, I just looked thru the threads and he didn't state which one it was. He needs to look at the multiplier and state whether it is set at 10.5 or 13. If it's at 10.5 then yeah it should run at 200, but if it's at 13, then the stock speed will put the frequency at 166.

He said he bought a "brand new" 3000+, those 333 mhz 3000+ processors haven't been around for a long time and were as rare as hen's teeth. But, if it is a 333 3000+, that would mean the FSB is running at a very odd frequency that would have to be manually set in the bios. Kamui's understanding of the bios kind of rules that out. In any case, until he posts back, there is very little we can do to help him.
