Hi everyone I have a Hp pavillion Notebook, and I am suppose to have an AMD Anthlon XP 2200+ chip in. Sometimes and I mean rarely the chip says that it is running at 1.6mhz, you know under the hardware look up. BUT most of the time it says it is running at 910mhz, I pretty much have had this problem since I got the machine. When I reboot it goes back to the 1.6, the I run like photoshop and all hell breaks lose. Should I take it back I am still under warranty, or can I fix the issue. HELP.

| Theoretically, that's how that CPU works. When it gets hot, like when it's running tasks or during your OS, it will throttle down to cool it down. That's why it's call the Mobile XP. I don't know if there is an option in the BIOS to turn off throttling, but if it can be done, it will keep your CPU operating at the max speed (1.6Ghz) all the the times. You will have to consult your mobo manual (BIOS Setup Guide) to see if you can find the feature to turn off throttling.

Well if that's the case it is time to unload.... Thank you I am gonna check with Hp to see if there is a turn off switch. Do you tthink that if there is an off switch that it will burn the chi[p out faster? The problem is that the chip does not go back up to the 1.6mhz setting only if I turn off the computer for a while. Most of the time even if I am doing nothing I will go and check the settings and bamm there it is that 910 number I hate. maybe I will play it in the lottery. Thasnks

The setting to have variable speed is determined by your power option under control panel. Usually it is set at home/office. The reason why it starts at 1.6GHz is because that's what it does when booting up. Once it realize it doesn't need to run at full speed, it will slow down to conserve battery. If you always have it on AC adapter, then you can pick the option "Always on" or "Max Battery" These settings will allow it to run at full speed. As for "Max Battery" will force it to run at slow speed at all time. Hope this helps.

The laptop will throttle the CPU to whatever load is needed and depending on whether the laptop is on battery or not.
