Need advice for new motherboard

I'm running a Via KT133/A chip set with a DFI board, 512 megs of SDRAM and an Athlon 1800+ processor. I'd really like to get a new motherboard and some better ram, but keep the processor, unless someone gives me good reason to upgrade that also. My question is, what's a good board/ram combination that'll work with my 1800+? Or is it obsolete to the point I should upgrade it also. I use my pc for my photography hobby, using mainly Photoshop and a few other programs related to photography. Thanks.

You can get the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe and PC3200 & up RAM, which you can still use your 1800+ and still gain some performance increase due to better mobo/chipset and you can OC your CPU to probably an XP2100-XP2400 speed.

Ok, I've spent some time with Google doing some research on this board and it seems some of the complaints are about some USB problems. Also bios and drivers problems. Have you had any issues using this board? Or have these problems been fixed? Cause otherwise it seems Asus has a pretty nice board here. I'm particularly sensitive to USB troubles though as my present boards USB troubles are one of the reasons I want to upgrade.

Yep, that be the board I'm referring to. The vast majority of personal reviews I read are five stars all the way, but a few sneak in with some pretty negative comments. Of course I know there will always be a few bad apples in the basket, but if there are issues I'd like to know, and know if Asus has addressed them, before I purchase this board. Thanks.

This board is imo one of the better boards put out by asus. Make sure you have good memory nd if going with 2 sticks they must be identical.

There are many other threads that discuss and compare this board.

I use three nForce2 boards, an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, Abit NS7-F and Soltek 75FRN2-L. They are all very good. The Abit has the edge on performance, as it is a better overclockers board for getting the most performance out of your chip and offers features just about equivalent to the Asus. The Soltek is the best bargain board out there with great performance, but lacking some features like SATA, etc.
One thing about all of them is solid performance! All mine run 24/7.
I would suggest you buy the Abit NS7-S, as it should be less expensive then the Asus.
Good memory is always important with any of these boards. I use OCZ EL series in the Abit and Soltek and recently put some cheaper Samsung PC3200 in the Asus. I must say the Samsung surprised me and is running fine at 2.5/3/3.

I have heard somewhere that Abit's chipset HSF tend to become losened and sometimes even fall off and kill (short) components on the mobo. Be careful if you go this route.

the HSF on mine is tight on there, the nf7-s is the best athlon XP board that money can buy.

Two users agree on that! The best bang for the Athlon XP buck!

Awhile back, I saw some terrified pictures of what I mentioned above on a forum (don't remember where now). But it's good that yours is tight. Possibly Abit may have fixed the problem, which may have been the earlier batches.

For memory I use most times Crucial memory - Micron. Had some bad experiences with Samsung (killed my msi board) and with Kingstons.
